Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in Canada seeks an Engineering Manager to lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and analysts within the Safety and Physics discipline, ensuring safe, high‑quality delivery of engineering services for nuclear projects. You will mentor staff, align scope with project goals, and ensure QA and regulatory compliance across interfaces.

Travel to project sites is expected as required, with a strong emphasis on technical judgment and cross‑disciplinary collaboration. A P.Eng.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and P.Eng. in Ontario.
  • 10+ years in a nuclear licensing or nuclear engineering environment.
  • Experience leading or supervising technical teams in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Strong knowledge of CANDU reactor design and related systems.
  • Familiarity with deterministic and probabilistic safety analysis (DSA/PSA).
  • Experience mentoring engineers and designers.

Responsibilities

Job Description Overview

The Engineering Manager works closely with the Director of Engineering Services, Project Managers and Project Directors, Engineering Excellence Management, Engineering Managers from other mandates, and external clients and stakeholders to ensure the safe, high-quality, and well-coordinated delivery of engineering services. They will manage a team of approximately 15 people.

Your role
  • Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team of engineers and analysts, in the Safety and Physics discipline supporting engineering services.
  • Be accountable for the technical delivery and overall quality of assigned engineering scopes.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight to ensure deliverables meet contract requirements, client expectations, applicable nuclear codes and standards, and the company quality assurance program.
  • Ensure engineering activities are planned and executed in accordance with approved QA programs, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, assess, and manage technical issues and risks within assigned scope, escalating as appropriate.
  • Assign and prioritize work based on individual qualifications, experience, and competency to support safe and efficient execution.
  • Set and manage team priorities to align engineering objectives with overall project goals.
  • Provide technical coaching, mentorship, and professional development support.
  • Provide performance feedback, observations, and coaching to support a continuous learning culture.
  • Support the Director of Engineering Services in defining engineering scope, deliverables, future resource needs, and technical inputs for proposals and anticipated work.
  • Support effective technical integration across disciplines and interfaces by working collaboratively with Engineering Services, Engineering Excellence, and other project mandates.
  • Identify emerging technical demands and capability gaps based on project execution, client direction, and industry trends, and raise these to Engineering Services leadership.
  • Identify opportunities for prospective or future engineering work arising from project execution and support informed discussions with clients on upcoming needs.
  • Develop and maintain strong technical relationships with client‑side counterparts to support current delivery and informed discussion of future needs.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain tools, processes, and standard practices to improve engineering efficiency, effectiveness, consistency, and quality.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation in engineering analysis methods, design approaches, workflows, and digital tools.
  • Provide regular updates on engineering progress, priorities, risks, and issues to Engineering Services leadership.
  • Escalate significant technical, regulatory, or delivery risks to the Director of Engineering Services and the Project Manager/Project Director, as required.
About you
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in a related discipline and registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario.
  • 10+ years of experience in a nuclear licensing or nuclear engineering environment, including experience leading or supervising technical teams.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering environments with significant interfaces across licensing, safety analysis, mechanical, electrical/I&C, process control, and civil disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering scopes and technical teams on complex projects.
  • Strong knowledge of CANDU reactor design, including Nuclear Steam Plant (NSP) and Balance of Plant (BOP) systems; experience with safety systems, heat transport, containment, moderator, and plant control systems is an asset.
  • Knowledge of deterministic and probabilistic safety analysis (DSA/PSA) methodologies and familiarity with applicable nuclear codes and standards (Canadian, U.S., IAEA).
  • Familiarity with nuclear safety and licensing analysis tools such as CATHENA, NUCIRC, GOTHIC, MAAP, CAFTA, CFAST, or Risk Spectrum is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering scopes and technical teams on complex projects.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop engineers and designers.
  • Ability to work effectively and balance conflicting priorities.
  • Strong technical judgment and problem‑solving capability.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to project or client sites as required.
