Job summary

The City of Markham is seeking an Energy Engineer to support energy and greenhouse gas reduction initiatives across the organization. You will track, analyze, improve and report on citywide energy and utility consumption, helping meet net-zero targets by 2050.

Responsibilities include corporate energy planning, metering oversight, GRI reporting, and Ontario Regulation 507/18 compliance, with opportunities for process improvements and cost savings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent with energy focus.
  • Five to seven years in energy management, utility tracking, metering, reporting or related field.
  • Certified Measurement and Verification Professional and/or Certified Energy Manager is a strong asset.
  • Experience with metering systems and energy reporting is an asset.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.

Job Summary

The Sustainability and Asset Management department is leading Markham’s efforts to achieve net-zero energy emissions by 2050. Reporting to the Manager, Facility Capital Planning, the Energy Engineer will support corporate energy and greenhouse gas reduction initiatives by tracking, analyzing, improving and reporting on Citywide energy and utility consumption.

This role is responsible for initiatives including corporate energy management planning, metering systems, utility and bill management, Global Reporting Initiative reporting, Ontario Regulation 507/18 reporting, monitoring and verification of energy project savings, employee awareness campaigns, greenhouse gas tracking, and identification of energy and cost savings opportunities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of the Corporate Energy Management Plan and support corporate initiatives that advance Markham’s net-zero emissions target by 2050.
  • Establish and maintain corporate energy and greenhouse gas reduction targets, and support an energy conservation culture across the organization.
  • Develop, implement and maintain standardized billing-grade and non-billing-grade metering programs, including needs assessment, design, implementation, commissioning review, maintenance specifications and data access.
  • Analyze utility consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and costs; investigate variances; calculate, track and report energy, greenhouse gas and cost savings.
  • Track, analyze, improve and report on corporate energy initiatives, including Global Reporting Initiative reporting, Ontario Regulation 25/23 and 507/18 requirements, annual facility budgets and greenhouse gas tracking.
  • Develop monitoring and verification plans for energy and greenhouse gas saving projects and complete post-project analysis to confirm savings.
  • Study, refine and recommend billing and utility accounting procedures; resolve utility billing issues with providers and vendors; and identify cost savings through rate, meter and billing analysis.
  • Identify, secure and manage grants and incentives for energy and greenhouse gas reduction initiatives, including support for energy audits and related funding requirements.
  • Plan, organize and implement employee training, competitions and awareness programs that promote energy conservation and operational efficiency.
  • Review facility lifecycle replacement plans and identify opportunities for energy-efficient upgrades, recommissioning, retrofit projects, renewable energy programs and maintenance improvements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to internal teams, facility staff, consultants, utilities, vendors and other stakeholders on energy management, metering, reporting and sustainability initiatives.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for Council, senior staff and internal partners on corporate energy results and related initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent technical diploma or degree with a focus on Energy Management, Electrical, Mechanical or HVAC.
  • Certified Measurement and Verification Professional and/or Certified Energy Manager certification is required or considered a strong asset.
  • Five to seven years of related experience in energy management, utility tracking, metering, reporting, greenhouse gas reduction initiatives or a related field.
  • Mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of HVAC systems and operations.
  • Ability to work from building drawings, architectural plans, operational guides and manuals.
  • Experience preparing reports for Global Reporting Initiative and Ontario Regulation 507/18 is an asset.
  • Experience with metering systems, including Delta, Schneider ION, Eaton Power and Xpert Insight, is an asset.
  • Experience installing metering and monitoring system hardware and software is an asset.
  • Experience with Brightly Energy Manager, bill auditing and analysis, utility reporting and facility energy budgets is an asset.
  • Ability to compute electrical and thermal energy savings and analyze hourly usage data to identify anomalies, metering issues or changes in usage patterns.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and SharePoint, and experience with sub-metering systems and reporting software.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, project coordination, prioritization, time management, customer service, communication and presentation skills.
  • Valid Ontario “G” driver’s licence with a clean driver’s abstract.
