Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Working as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team in the Ambulatory Care setting and Specialty clinics or units, such as Endoscopy, Urodynamics, Minor Surgical Plastics and Cataract Sedation Nurse (as applicable to setting/site). The RN practices in accordance with the professional and practice standards and code of ethics as outlined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and applies best practices in accordance with established organizational policies, procedures, guidelines, and other controls on practice to provide competent, safe and ethical care for people and their families in a variety of ambulatory care settings. Reports to the Nurse Manager, Department Head, or designate and acts in accordance with the unit/program philosophy, competency guidelines, policies, Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics for Nursing and the BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice in British Columbia

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training And Experience

Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant. Basic Cardiac Life Support, Level C.

  • Completion of recognized post-basic education in gastroenterology/GI endoscopy nursing and/or Urodynamics, OR
  • Successful completion of the gastroenterology nursing training program within 3 months of hire, OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in Endoscopy, Urodynamics, minor surgical speciality clinic and procedural sedation.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide client and family-centered care through a trauma-informed, cultural safety and humility approach and evidence-informed practice
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of an inter-professional team
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Endoscopy clinic/surgical ambulatory clinic foundational nursing practice
  • Demonstrated effective written, electronic, and verbal communication to facilitate inter-professional collaborative practice, healthy and respectful workplace for clients, staff, students and partners/affiliates
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and navigate other disciplines scope of practice in relation to one's own
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data from multiple sources to problem-solve effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to provide health education with clients and others about topics essential to healthcare, health promotion, and chronic disease self-management
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time, triage client needs, and resources effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of care planning and care coordination, including knowledge of Primary Care programs and services
  • Demonstrates professional self-awareness, developing and implementing own learning goals for continuous learning and professional development
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with changing priorities
