A community healthcare provider is seeking an Emergency Medicine Physician to provide locum coverage. The role is located in Central Saanich, BC, within a 65-bed acute care hospital. Applicants must hold CCFP-EM or FRCPC, be eligible for full licensure, and have community hospital experience. The Saanich Peninsula Hospital (SPH) Emergency Medicine Department is seeking Emergency Medicine Physicians to provide locum coverage. SPH is a 65-bed acute care community hospital with an 18-bed emergency department that treats about 31,000 patients per year. The ED serves as the primary referral hospital for the Southern Gulf Islands, with an estimated catchment population of about 87,000. The ED is staffed by a group of 16 full-time and part-time emergency physicians, scheduled over five shifts per day with 12 hours of double coverage. Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care and Anesthesiology are available during daytime hours, with additional Specialists in the community. Tertiary care support and consultants are 30 minutes away at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Laboratory services run 24/7, and Medical Imaging (including a CT scanner) operates 07:30–24:00 daily with on-call overnight. Physicians must be comfortable in a single-coverage department without onsite Respiratory Therapy or ICU support. Affiliation with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program provides regular teaching opportunities for medical students and residents in the ED.
Applicants must hold CCFP-EM or FRCPC Emergency Medicine and be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. The group is actively seeking candidates with community hospital ED experience, flexibility in scheduling, and availability to address crisis call volume and acuity in the department.
