JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), the Emergency Department (ED) Ward Clerk is responsible for promoting a positive experience and providing customer service to patients and families presenting to the Emergency Department. The ED Ward Clerk also organizes work within the unit, interacts with other departments to ensure seamless patient care, and provides clerical support to the clinical team.

The role includes, but is not limited to, performing a range of administrative and clerical tasks such as telephone enquiries, appointment scheduling, patient registration, photocopying, faxing and transcribing physician orders, order entry, collecting patient payment, and liaising with various medical professionals and other stakeholders. The Ward Clerk provides pleasant, cooperative, timely and accurate information to physicians, nursing staff and patients, exhibiting sound judgement and initiative while working within the Mission, Vision and Strategic Directions of the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Minimum education requirement: high school diploma or GED.
  2. Diploma in Office Administration and/or experience in a health‑care environment considered to be an asset.
  3. Must possess clerical experience and an understanding of computer use for business purposes (e.g.: Microsoft Office including Word and Excel, email, Internet, MEDITECH)
EXPERIENCE & ABILITIES
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology is a strong asset.
  2. Fluency in Meditech software and the ability to navigate the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a strong asset. Training will be provided.
  3. Experience working in a fast‑paced environment.
  4. Ability to work all shifts including weekends, holidays and on short notice.
  5. Ability to demonstrate initiative, sound judgement and remain calm in stressful situations.
  6. Ability to display excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills.
  7. Ability to work independently, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  8. Ability to prioritize job requirements and work in an effective and efficient manner.
  9. Ability to respect the confidentiality of personal and patient information.
  10. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  11. Commitment to prompting a culture of respect that supports safety, ethical practices, cultural awareness and sensitivity and organizational health.
  12. Competencies in the English language and other languages considered to be an asset.
