Job summary

A community literacy organization is offering a volunteer opportunity to work with elementary-aged learners in a positive and safe environment. As a volunteer, you will engage with children aged 7-12, fostering their learning through games and activities. This role requires certification or education along with a vulnerable sector check. Volunteers will receive training and the chance to build valuable experience, positively impacting young lives. Various in-person and remote time slots are available.

Elementary Reading Circle Program (In-person/Remote)

1‑4 hours weekly

February 1, 2026 ‑ April 13, 2026

United for Literacy believes everyone has the right to literacy and education in a positive and safe environment that meets each learner's unique needs. We have been on the front lines of reading help since 1899 and we continue to be an organization that works with and for our community. In our Reading Circle Program, you will work with elementary‑aged learners (ages 7‑12) and create a fun environment that builds positive memories and experiences around learning and reading. You will work one‑on‑one and in small groups with learners to play games, do activities, read, write and build their confidence!

Locations and Times:

  • [In‑Person] Millwoods location (South Side) – Tuesday 6:30‑7:30 pm
  • [In‑Person] Whitemud Crossing (South Central) – Wednesday 6:30‑7:30 pm
  • [In‑Person] Whitemud Crossing (South Central) – Thursday 4‑5 pm
  • [In‑Person] Stanley A. Milner (Downtown) – Saturday 4‑5 pm
  • [In‑Person] Lois Hole location (West End) – Saturday 4:30‑5:30 pm
  • [In‑Person] Strathcona location (Whyte Ave) – Sunday 3‑4 pm
  • [Online] Remote location – Tuesday 6:30‑7:30 pm / Wednesday 6:30‑7:30 pm
