Job summary

HPEDSB in Belleville, Ontario is seeking an Electrician Maintenance ‘A’ to install, repair, replace, modify and troubleshoot electrical equipment across board-owned facilities. You will ensure safe, code-compliant operation of lighting, HVAC, fire alarm, and related systems in schools and administrative sites.

Qualifications

• Certificate of Qualification as Electrician (Construction and Maintenance, 309A)
• Current registration as Fire Alarm Technician with CFAA or ECAO Certi-Fire preferred or willingness to obtain
• Minimum of six months related electrical maintenance experience
• Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, OHSA, and safe work practices (Lockout/Tagout, Confined Spaces, Working at Heights)
• Ability to interpret electrical blueprints, troubleshoot circuits, and operate diagnostic meters & infrared testing equipment
• Valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence and access to a reliable vehicle for multi-location demands
• Satisfactory Criminal and Judicial Background Check

Responsibilities

• Inspect and perform emergency repairs on specialized equipment, coordinating with external suppliers when needed.

• Conduct routine inspections of buildings and liaise with ESA for field inspections and deficiency follow-ups.
• Source and procure electrical materials and tools needed for daily operations.
• Assist with hazardous waste handling in compliance with environmental regulations.
• Maintain Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, and fall protection protocols.
• Provide backup support to colleagues and mentor apprentices while promoting safe practices.
• Perform infrared scanning of connections to identify hot spots and oversee energy conservation equipment maintenance.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Electrician is responsible for installing, repairing, replacing, modifying, and troubleshooting electrical equipment and systems across all Board-owned facilities. This role ensures that all electrical infrastructure operates safely, efficiently, and in strict compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) regulations, and institutional policies to maintain a safe environment for staff, students, and community members.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Install, repair, replace, modify, and troubleshoot electrical equipment and systems, including fire alarms, lighting, heating, ventilating/HVAC, refrigeration, and water supply/treatment systems.

• Install, program, and maintain modern electrical and electronic systems, such as circuit breakers, automated building systems, smart timers, and master clock systems.

• Inspect and execute emergency repairs on specialized machinery (e.g., gym folding doors), coordinating with external suppliers as required.

• Keep precise, current documentation of all new, repaired, and replaced equipment in compliance with Board policies, ESA regulations, etc.

• Conduct routine inspections of Board buildings for potential repairs or upgrades. Act as the point of contact to liaise with ESA agents for field inspections and deficiency follow-ups.

• Evaluate, select, and source necessary electrical materials, tools, and components required for daily operations.

• Safely assist in the removal, inventory, documentation, and storage of hazardous waste materials, such as PCB ballasts, according to environmental regulations.

• Maintain and strictly execute Lockout/Tagout procedures, Confined Space Entry, and fall protection protocols.

• Provide reliable backup assistance to co-workers and Lead Hands, and provide mentorship to apprentices as required while ensuring safe work practices.

• Perform infrared scanning of electrical connections for hot spots; inspect energy conservation equipment and ensure related preventative maintenance programs are in effect.

• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Completion of a Certificate of Qualification as an Electrician (Construction and Maintenance, 309A), and in good standing with Skilled Trades Ontario.

• Current registration as a Fire Alarm Technician with the Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA) or ECAO Certi-Fire certification is preferred, or willingness to obtain.

• Minimum of six (6) months of related work experience performing electrical maintenance, preferably within a commercial, municipal or institutional environment.

• Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and standard safe work practices (including Lockout/Tagout, Confined Spaces, and Working at Heights).

• Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret electrical blueprints, execute circuit troubleshooting, and operate diagnostic meters and infrared testing equipment.

• Must possess a valid Ontario Class ‘G’ Driver’s License and have consistent access to a reliable vehicle to meet the multi-location demands of this position.

• Satisfactory Criminal and Judicial Background Check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Frequent travel to various Board-owned properties and facilities.

• Exposure to a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including mechanical rooms, electrical vaults, crawlspaces, ceilings, and roofs

• Regular exposure to high-voltage electrical systems, working at elevated heights, and confined spaces. Proper adherence to safety protocols is mandatory to mitigate risks

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and operate aerial work platforms (e.g., Genie lifts) or boom trucks.

• Ability to work in confined spaces, bend, kneel, and stand for extended periods.

• Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy electrical equipment, materials, and tools up to standard trade weight limits
