THE POSITION

The hourly Electrician supports the safe, reliable operation of electrical systems throughout CSEC venues. Reporting to and working under the direction of the full-time Manager of Trades, this role assists with preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, event changeovers, and temporary power requirements. The position helps ensure electrical work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable codes, venue standards, and operational priorities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Carry out assigned preventative maintenance, inspections, and corrective repairs on electrical distribution equipment, lighting systems, controls, and related infrastructure under the direction of the Manager of Trades.
  • Assist with troubleshooting electrical faults using approved test equipment and elevate complex, unusual, or high-risk conditions to the Journeyperson Electrician.
  • Maintain interior and exterior lighting, including bowl, concourse, back-of-house, parkade, architectural, emergency, and exit lighting.
  • Support event operations and changeovers by responding to service requests, installing approved temporary power, verifying circuits, and remaining available for event-critical electrical support.
  • Assist with inspection, testing, and maintenance of emergency power and life-safety-related electrical components within the position’s authorized scope.
  • Install, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain structured cabling, including Cat6/Cat6A, fibre-optic, and communications infrastructure, as assigned.
  • Complete work orders, maintenance logs, inspection records, test results, and parts-usage documentation accurately in the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Coordinate assigned work with the Journeyperson Electrician, other trades, event operations, tenants, and approved contractors to minimize disruption.
  • Monitor common electrical parts and consumables and advise the Journeyperson Electrician of replenishment or material requirements.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, energized-work, working-at-heights, permit, and other safety procedures; stop work and immediately report hazards or conditions outside the role’s authority or competency.
  • Respond to urgent power issues, equipment failures, and event-related requests during scheduled shifts and call-ins, as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Journeyperson Electrician or Building Operations leadership.
THE INDVIDUAL

The ideal individual will have the following background:

  • Valid Journeyperson Electrician Certificate recognized in Alberta or interprovincial Red Seal certification.
  • Practical experience in commercial, industrial, institutional, or large-facility electrical maintenance; experience in an arena, stadium, convention centre, hospital, or similar venue is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and applicable Alberta legislation, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, equipment manuals, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to use electrical testing tools safely, including multimeters and clamp meters.
  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to obtain required venue access or clearances.
  • Ability to work at heights, in electrical and mechanical rooms, and throughout a busy public venue.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Experience supporting live events, touring productions, broadcast operations, or other time-critical environments.
  • Familiarity with lighting-control systems, generator systems, automatic transfer switches, uninterruptible power supplies, or power-quality troubleshooting.
  • Experience installing or troubleshooting copper and fibre-optic structured cabling, CCTV, access control, telecommunications, or related building technology systems.
  • Aerial work platform and forklift training or certification.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems and mobile work-order tools.
  • Awareness of fire alarm system interfaces and experience coordinating with certified fire alarm technicians.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
  • Strong practical troubleshooting skills and the judgment to recognize when work must be stopped or escalated.
  • Safety-first mindset with disciplined adherence to instructions, procedures, and hazard controls.
  • Clear, professional communication with the Journeyperson Electrician, other trades, event staff, tenants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Ability to organize assigned tasks, respond to changing priorities, and work effectively during event-driven deadlines.
  • Team-oriented approach and willingness to support broader Building Operations requirements during peak periods.
  • Attention to detail in inspections, testing, documentation, housekeeping, and completion of work.
WORKING CONDITIONS & SCHEDULE
  • Work is performed throughout the venue, including the bowl, concourses, back-of-house areas, catwalks and roof areas where permitted, electrical rooms, parkades, loading areas, and exterior spaces.
  • The schedule is based on operational and event requirements and may include days, evenings, overnight work, weekends, holidays, call-ins, and overtime.
  • The role may be exposed to noise, crowds, changing temperatures, restricted work areas, and time-sensitive event conditions.
  • Physical demands include extended standing and walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, working at heights, and lifting or carrying tools and materials up to 23 kg / 50 lb with reasonable assistance where required.
  • Use of required personal protective equipment and compliance with all site safety rules are mandatory.
SAFETY, COMPLIANCE & STANDARDS
  • Comply with Alberta occupational health and safety requirements, the Canadian Electrical Code, and all applicable venue policies and procedures.
  • Perform only work for which the employee is trained, authorized, and competent, and follow the direction of the Journeyperson Electrician for assigned electrical activities.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, energized-work, incident-reporting, working-at-heights, confined-space, and hot-work or permit procedures, as applicable.
  • Maintain clean, orderly, and secure work areas and protect staff and public spaces using appropriate barricades, signage, and controls.
  • Immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, near misses, incidents, and damaged equipment, and participate in investigations and corrective actions when required.
