Who Are We?

Smith and Long is one of Canada’s fastest-growing, large-scale, multi-trade companies. While our roots are in Electrical, Mechanical, and Engineering services, our expertise spans far beyond—offering fully integrated solutions across high voltage infrastructure, civil construction, building automation, and energy systems. We’re driven by a commitment to quality, innovation, and excellence in everything we do. With the agility of a startup and the depth of a seasoned construction and engineering firm, we deliver results that make an impact.

At Smith and Long, we don’t just estimate—we engineer outcomes. If you’re a self-starter with deep knowledge of High, Medium, and Low Voltage systems and a passion for full-scope, client-driven solutions, this is your opportunity to thrive and grow with us.

We are currently seeking an experienced Estimator to join our High Voltage and Civil Division at our Etobicoke Head Office. This intermediate-to-senior level role is pivotal in shaping the future of our high-voltage projects—from substations and switchgear to utility and renewable energy infrastructure.

In this role, you’ll work with minimal supervision to produce detailed take-offs, design/build proposals, and accurate cost estimates for High Voltage, Medium Voltage, and Low Voltage systems. Collaborating with project managers, engineers, field staff, and leadership, you’ll analyze technical drawings, project specifications, and client requirements to deliver competitive, comprehensive solutions that drive project success. This position offers real potential for growth into a Senior or Chief Estimator role.

Responsibilities
  • Reading and interpreting complex electrical drawings and specifications for High Voltage, Medium Voltage, and Low Voltage systems.
  • Creating a complete take-off/scope of work from drawings & specifications for High Voltage, Medium Voltage & Low Voltage projects.
  • Producing a complete design/build proposal for High Voltage, Medium Voltage & Low Voltage projects, with little customer input, other than overall desired outcome and/or a visit to their site/facility.
  • Ensuring all designs comply with OESC (Ontario Electrical Safety Code) and local utility standards.
  • Estimating both overhead and underground labour/material requirements for HV/MV/LV projects.
  • Performing detailed calculations including:
    • Service demand/load
    • Conductor sizing and selection
    • Conduit fill and voltage drop
    • Transformer sizing and selection
  • Identifying and specifying appropriate transformer types and configurations for various applications.
  • Collaborating with suppliers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders to gather pricing and technical data.
  • Supporting project turnover to operations and project management teams.
Qualifications
  • 309A Electrical Construction and Maintenance License or equivalent.
  • Deep knowledge of OESC and utility standards for customer-owned HV/MV/LV systems.
  • Experience with both field work and project management in electrical construction.
  • Advanced proficiency in:
    • Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
    • AutoCAD
    • Accubid (preferred)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-directed, highly organized, and capable of working independently or as part of a cross-functional team.
Benefits
  • Growth Opportunities: Join a forward-thinking team with ample opportunities for career development. We provide a clear path for you to grow into a Senior/Chief Estimator role.
  • Competitive Compensation: Enjoy a competitive salary, performance-based bonuses, and a full benefits package including health, dental, and group retirement plan.
  • Employee Perks: Take advantage of exclusive corporate discounts, mobile plans, and wellness initiatives to help you maintain a great work-life balance.
  • Innovation-Driven Culture: Be part of a dynamic company that encourages innovation and creativity, where your ideas are valued and can shape the future of the industry.
