Job description
Role

Reporting to the Discipline Lead - Distribution, the Distribution Engineer/Designer is responsible for communicating directly with clients and customers to establish service requirements and provide solid design solutions and alternatives that meet client needs. Distribution Engineer/Designer will work with landowners, customers, and other client departments to ensure that the projects are effectively coordinated and executed by yourself. They will ensure that facilities are designed in a safe, cost-effective and timely manner and meet all applicable codes, standards and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Independently execute the design of rural and urban distribution infrastructure including but not limited to: line rebuilds, cable/equipment upgrades, voltage conversions, customer connections/upgrades, joint use applications, URD, DER/microgeneration interconnection, and more
  • Provide technical reviews and quality assurance on project deliverables prepared by junior and intermediate staff
  • Coordinate with clients, landowners, utility companies, and third-party stakeholders to secure approvals and resolve technical or permitting challenges
  • Proactively monitor project progress, proactively identifying risks, constraints, and opportunities to maintain scope, budget, and schedule
  • Conduct site assessments and field reviews to validate design feasibility, support construction, and ensure alignment with good engineering and construction practices
  • Identify and address safety and environmental risks within project designs, implementing solutions in compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and drafters, fostering skill development and knowledge sharing
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including the development of design standards, processes, and best practices
Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering degree required, or Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • 2 - 8 years of distribution experience is preferred but not required
  • Possess a working knowledge of Alberta Electrical Utility Code, CSA C22.3 No. 1 and No. 7 for Overhead and Underground Systems and the Canadian Electrical Code
  • Proficient in or capable of using PLSCadd, Pull Planner, AutoCAD, Microstation, Bluebeam, AGI32, and CYMEdist
  • Experience in construction and field installations an asset
  • Experience in distribution system planning would be considered an asset. This includes planning studies, equipment settings, and more
  • Experience working with EPCOR, ENMAX, SaskPower, ATCO, and FortisAlberta is considered an asset
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical drawings and schematics, civil drawings, and more
  • Possess strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Eligible for registration with APEGA or ASET
  • Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills
