Job summary

The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board is hiring an Educational Assistant to support special needs students across elementary and secondary settings. You will work with teachers to implement lessons, support transitions to school, and maintain detailed progress notes.

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary educational assistant program (or equivalent) and at least one year of experience with children, along with a compassionate, discreet and team-oriented approach.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary educational assistant program (1 year) or equivalent, plus a minimum of one year experience working with children.
  • Relevant additional training is an asset.
  • Ability to perform required physical tasks, including toileting and lifting.
  • A positive and empathetic attitude towards students.
  • Ability to maintain discretion with confidential information.
  • Ability to function independently within the framework of a team.
  • Basic knowledge in the use of computer software.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in delivering a prescribed program with special needs students in both individual and group settings.
  • Aid children in transitioning from home to school and act as liaison between students and the teacher.
  • Attend meetings, take notes, and assist in lesson delivery under teacher direction.
  • Implement Individualized Education Plans and report on student development.
  • Observe and report on behaviour, academic progress, and social development; maintain logs.
  • Support behaviour management, crisis intervention, and de-escalation.
  • Assist with feeding and washroom needs for special needs students as required.
  • Help plan field trips and participate in general school duties and class tasks.

Full-Time - 35 Hours Per Week -10 Month Position (1.0 FTE)
Start Date: Immediately ; Duration: Permanent
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a post secondary educational assistant program (normally one year), or equivalent, plus a minimum of one year experience working with children;
  • Relevant additional training is an asset;
  • Ability and willingness to perform required physical tasks, including toileting and lifting;
  • A positive and empathetic attitude towards students;
  • Ability to maintain discretion with confidential information;
  • Ability to function independently within the framework of a team; and
  • Basic knowledge in the use of computer software.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assist in the delivery of a prescribed program with special needs students in both individual and group settings. This includes:
  • Aid the children in the transition from home to school;
  • Act as a liaison between students and the teacher;
  • Act as a facilitator by attending meetings, when required, and taking appropriate notes;
  • Assist the teacher in the delivery of lessons or projects for special needs students by creating and designing crafts, charts and teaching materials under the direction of the teacher;
  • Assist the teacher in implementing the Individualized Education Plan for special needs students;
  • Assist the teacher in observing and reporting to the teacher on the students' behaviour, academic, motor and social development, including preparing written reports and maintaining student communication log;
  • Assist the teacher in the behaviour management of students, including conflict management, crisis intervention and de-escalation of student behaviour;
  • Assist special needs students with feeding as required;
  • Assist special needs students with washroom facilities, toileting and change soiled and wet clothing when required;
  • Maintain routines and rules in the classroom;
  • To help plan and implement field trips for special needs students, when required;
  • Participate in general school duties, including assisting the teacher in student supervision;
  • Provide support in the classroom to teacher and pupils as directed. This includes general classroom tasks such as making copies, setting up displays, preparing materials, cleaning up after lessons, ordering supplies, and setting up VCRs, and CD players; and
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Preference is given to individuals in the casual Educational Assistant pool for all temporary and permanent Educational Assistant positions.
