EDUCATION ASSISTANT

We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Educational Assistants who are passionate about helping students thrive. In this role, you’ll work closely with learners and staff to provide personalized support, contributing to a positive, inclusive environment where every student can succeed.

Job Summary
  • Facilitates the inclusion of students with diverse abilities and disabilities by encouraging and supporting them to become independent learners and members of the classroom, school and community.
  • Supports learning and skill development through school activities, one-on-one or small groups, field trips, work experience programs, physical education activities and special events.
  • Assists with supervision of individual or small groups of students, during the temporary absence of teacher.
  • Assists students in developing functional social and life skills, including work and recreational experiences in school and community-based settings.
  • In collaboration with the teacher, uses materials to implements strategies to accommodate individual learner needs.
  • Observes and documents learner strengths, achievements and needs through daily learning activities. Assists in the collection of data and maintaining student records for the purpose of evaluating student progress. Provides information to teacher for home/school formal/informal communications.
  • Monitors student behavior, applies appropriate interventions for co-regulation and encourages self-regulation; uses de-escalation strategies and follows individualized plans as required.
  • Carrying out personal and health care plan as directed.
  • Provides personal care as required, including feeding, dressing and undressing, toileting, cleaning or washing child or clothing and lifting into and out of wheelchairs, buses and cars.
  • Supports speech-language pathologists and vision and hearing specialist teachers in the delivery of required services.
  • Follows established protocol regarding administration of medicine and/or medical procedures.
  • Supports the physical safety of students during exercise or play activities, including the use of mobility aids as required. This may involve support in the swimming pool.
  • Supports students' use of personalized tools, including technology, various assistive communication tools, visual supports and personalized agendas, among others.
  • Maintains current knowledge of specific emergency procedures and equipment as per students' individualized plans. Ensures required equipment accompanies students in all school activities and reports suspected defects or maintenance requirements to Principal or Vice-Principal.
  • Participates in meetings, planning and liaising with parents, District staff and other professionals, as directed.
  • May, on occasion, be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
Assignments

On Call Monday - Friday, long term temporary assignments, with progression to permanent assignments.

Wage

$31.78 per hour with an additional 10.8% in lieu of benefits and statutory holidays

Qualifications And Experience
  • High school graduation or the equivalent.
  • Oral and written fluency in English
  • Successful completion of an Education Assistant certificate program, two 100 hour practicums, or 3 months related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Training in de-escalation strategies (i.e. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention)
  • Excellent, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in basic behaviour intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive rapport with students.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Demonstrated physical stamina, coordination, and capability necessary to actively engage and keep pace with students during physical activities and throughout the school day.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information seen or heard.
