True North Manufacturing Inc. (TNMI) is an industrialized construction company based in Midland, ON, focused on value added panelized wall, floor and roofing systems, as well as sub-assembly components for residential construction.

By combining key manufacturing concepts from automotive and other industries, including the conflow process model, our products help to greatly reduce costs and lead-time while simultaneously improving quality.

We are also students of the Toyota Production System and the Toyota Way and have adapted these core strategies into our own TNMI Way.

Role Description and Responsibilities Summary:

This is a full-time on-site role for a Specialist – Structural Engineering at TNMI.The working environment is an office and occasional factory environment.May involve site visits or consultations with customer or field crews.

The Specialist – Structural Engineering at TNMI will be responsible for designing code compliant wall, floor and truss systems using relevant software.Additional supporting role for estimating by reviewing plans and identifying structural needs. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of wood frame construction, relevant design software, Ontario Building Code (OBC) requirements and a P. Eng classification.

This position is ideal for those passionate about translating conceptual designs into practical applications within the construction industry, specifically focusing on low- and mid-rise residential construction.

  • Design Execution: Interpret architectural and structural blueprints to create accurate, code-compliant component layouts to design structural wood components including roof trusses, floor trusses, and wall panels using industry-standard software (e.g., Mitek, Alpine, or similar).
  • Engage in new product design and testing, ensuring alignment with the latest design trends, building codes, and innovations.Collaborate with sales, engineering, and production teams to ensure design feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
  • Quality and Safety Compliance: Ensure all designs adhere to both customer expectations and TNMI's stringent safety and quality standards, as well as compliance with the Ontario Building Code and CSA standards.
  • Professional Development: Embrace continuous learning to enhance your skills, with a significant focus on training and development within the TNMI Engineering functions.
  • Customer and Team Interaction: Maintain a professional, service-oriented approach within the team and uphold the values encapsulated in the TNMI Way.
  • Continuous Improvement Principles: Advocate for and apply TPS (Toyota Production System) principles and methodologies in day-to-day activities.
  • Additional Duties: Take on special projects, perform additional duties as necessary, and participate in a mandatory annual rotation in production operations.
  • Willingness to work overtime and/or weekends as needed.
  • Participation in the initial Orientation & Training process, which includes working in production operations.

What We are Looking For:

  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams software.Strong experience with REVIT, Vertex, Mitek, Alpine, or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of wood frame construction and building science principles.
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Building Code and relevant structural design standards.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Team oriented, communicates well with others and able to interact with people at all levels and departments.
  • Positive and professional attitude
  • Sound problem solving skills and desire to succeed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • P.Eng. (or working toward it) with 2–5+ years in structural or prefab systems.
  • A design portfolio including multi-residential, single detached, and low- and mid-rise developments that demonstrates design excellence.
  • Proficient in building technology and construction methodologies, with a thorough understanding of material selection and the application of manufacturers specifications.
  • Demonstrated efficiency extensive experience in navigating the building permit process in Ontario/Canada.
  • Familiarity with Toyota Production System or prefabrication processes.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary Range:$73,008 - $114,400 per year (depending on experience and qualifications).
  • (Our team-members participate in a company-wide profit-sharing program.While outcomes vary year-to-year, this can significantly increase total annual compensation.)
