Job description

The Child Study Centre at Mount Saint Vincent University invites applications for the position of Early Childhood Educator.

MSVU Child Study Centre - Who We Are & What We Care About

Mount Saint Vincent University's Child Study Centre is entering an exciting new chapter as we prepare to open the expanded and new child care facility in early Spring 2027.

Founded in 1976, the Child Study Centre is a licensed, not-for-profit early learning and child care centre committed to providing high-quality, inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive programming for young children. We create environments where children and educators are inspired to explore, create, and grow, while honouring diverse identities, experiences and ways of knowing.

As a university-based child care centre, we work closely with the MSVU community and the Child and Youth Study program. Our educators have unique opportunities to mentor students, engage with research, contribute to innovative practice, and help shape the future of early childhood education and care in Nova Scotia.

We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, and our work is guided by the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework and a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, social justice, and environmental responsibility. We recognize that creating equitable and inclusive environments requires ongoing reflection, learning, and action. We are committed to the ongoing work of decolonization, and believe that reflective practice, curiosity, and lifelong learning strengthen both individuals and communities.

We strive to create a workplace and space where educators feel supported, respected, and inspired to continue learning throughout their careers.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Child Study Centre, the Early Childhood Educator contributes to a safe, inclusive, and responsive environment where children are recognized as capable, curious, and active participants in their learning and experiences. The Early Childhood Educator works collaboratively with children, families, and colleagues to observe, document, and develop responsive curriculum that emerges from children's interests, ideas, relationships, and experiences. The role includes supporting children's well-being, belonging, and participation; creating thoughtful indoor and outdoor environments; and engaging in reflective pedagogical practice and collaborative inquiry.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 3 years of experience working with children in an ECE classroom and an ECE Level 2 or higher. The candidate will need to be familiar with the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework and have experience working with children using an emergent curriculum approach. They will be familiar with observing children and recording these observations to create relevant curriculum experiences in the classroom. The candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and should be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

The candidate will demonstrate a genuine appreciation for children and their abilities. The candidate must be able to work as part of a team of educators and work cooperatively with families. Willingness to continue with professional development and education is a must. First Aid and CPR certification is required.

Experience with pedagogical documentation would be an asset. Specific work experience with children below three years of age is an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Child Abuse Registry check, Vulnerable Sector check, and Criminal Records check.

Responsibilities
  • Co-create, implement, and reflect on responsive curriculum and learning experiences.
  • Create safe, inclusive, and engaging indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Observe and document children's interests, ideas, experiences, and participation.
  • Build respectful, reciprocal relationships with children, families, and colleagues.
  • Mentor and support practicum students and volunteers.
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning, reflective practice, and quality improvement initiatives.
