Job summary

SE Health Driver Assessment & Training in Mississauga seeks an experienced Driving Instructor to conduct on-road assessments, rehabilitation training, and client-focused instruction in partnership with Occupational Therapists.

The role requires an Ontario Driving Instructor Certification, 5+ years in-vehicle instruction, and the ability to operate with adaptive driving equipment in a client-centered environment.

Qualifications

  • Ontario Driving Instructor Certification required.
  • Minimum five years as an in-vehicle driving instructor.
  • Vehicle must be insured and equipped with dual brake controls and basic adaptive equipment.
  • Maintain liability insurance coverage of at least $2,000,000.
  • Active membership with ADED (Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists).
  • Keep 8 hours of driver rehabilitation continuing education every two years.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Occupational Therapists with on-road driving assessments.
  • Deliver individualized driver rehabilitation training under OT supervision.
  • Provide and maintain an instructor vehicle with dual controls and adaptive equipment.
  • Prepare, inspect, and maintain vehicles and adaptive equipment.
  • Assist clients with Ministry of Transportation licensing requirements.
  • Complete accurate documentation following SE Health standards.
  • Communicate with OTs about client progress and goals.
  • Respond to client needs professionally and promptly.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure high-quality service.
  • Participate in ongoing staff education and training.

As a Driving Instructor with SE Health's Driver Assessment and Training Program, you’ll work in partnership with Occupational Therapists to provide specialized on-road assessments, rehabilitation, and individualized driver training for clients with disabilities and medical conditions. Who You’ll Serve
  • Support individuals returning to driving or learning new ways to drive due to medical conditions, injuries, disabilities, or age-related changes. You’ll provide individualized instruction in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment
Responsibilities
  • Assist Occupational Therapists with on-road driving assessments.

Deliver individualized driver rehabilitation training under the supervision and direction of an Occupational Therapist, implementing training plans designed to address each client's unique needs and goals.

  • Provide and maintain an instructor vehicle equipped with dual controls and appropriate adaptive driving equipment.
  • Prepare, inspect, and maintain vehicles and adaptive equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Assist clients in navigating Ministry of Transportation licensing requirements and processes.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation following SE Health standards.
  • Communicate regularly with Occupational Therapists regarding client performance, progress, and training goals.
  • Respond professionally and effectively to client needs and concerns.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure high-quality client service.
  • Participate in ongoing staff education and training as required.
Requirements
  • Certification as an Ontario Driving Instructor.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as an in-vehicle driving instructor.
  • Ability to provide an insured training vehicle equipped with dual brake controls and installation of basic adaptive driving equipment, including hand controls, a left-foot accelerator, and spinner knob.
  • Maintain Business General Liability Insurance coverage of at least $2,000,000.
  • Active membership with the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED).
  • Maintain a minimum of eight (8) hours of driver rehabilitation continuing education every two years in accordance with MTO Functional Assessment Centre requirements.
  • Experience working with senior drivers, drivers experiencing driving anxiety, and new drivers with learning disabilities is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with modified vehicles and adaptive driving equipment is preferred.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's license with an excellent driving record.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationships with clients and families.
  • Understanding of the learning needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of driver rehabilitation and adaptive driving practices is considered an asset.
  • OTA, PTA, Rehabilitation Service Worker, adult education, or related rehabilitation experience is considered an asset.
  • Able to work independently while collaborating effectively with Occupational Therapists and other team members.
