Job summary

Greater Sudbury is seeking a Distribution/Collection Operator to maintain water distribution and wastewater systems. You will perform routine maintenance, operate equipment, and support up to three workers under supervision, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

The role requires a Grade XII education, a DZ licence, and willingness to complete Level 1 certifications within 18 months. Strong English communication and physical fitness are essential.

Qualifications

• Secondary School completion required.
• Ontario Class DZ licence with clean driving record.
• Willing to obtain Water Distribution Level 1 and Wastewater Collection Level 1 within 18 months.
• Ability to read and write shift reports; basic safety knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Operate water distribution and wastewater collection facilities; perform preventive and corrective maintenance.
• Transport personnel, materials, equipment, or refuse as needed.
• Assist in traffic control and flagging duties as directed.
• Collect samples and perform routine lab tests.
• Maintain knowledge of Safety Manual and provincial regulations.

Main Function: Operate equipment and perform functions to maintain CGS’s water treatment facilities, water distribution systems, wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater collective systems.

Characteristic: Under the supervision of a Distribution/Collection Foreperson/Sub-Foreperson.

Duties

• 1. Operate system components and perform preventative and corrective maintenance repairs to water distribution and wastewater collection facilities.
• 2. Transport personnel, material, merchandise, equipment or refuse.
• 3. Load and unload truck by hand or mechanical device, such as a loader.
• 4. Oversee up to three workers in the performance of routine duties.
• 5. Perform routine labour work as required.
• 6. Work as an assistant or helper to various tradespersons, equipment operators, crews or other personnel.
• 7. Perform the duties of flag person and assist in traffic control, as directed.
• 8. Collect samples and perform routine lab tests as directed.
• 9. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
• 10. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Training

• Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.
• Must possess a valid Ontario Class “DZ” drivers’ licence and have an acceptable driving record.
• Must be certified as an Operator In Training (OIT) and be willing and able to complete certification of Water Distribution Level 1 and Wastewater Collection Level 1 within eighteen (18) months.

Experience

• Six (6) months of related experience considered an asset.

Other Requirements

• Must be physically capable of performing the characteristic duties and operating a vehicle safely.
• Must be able to write necessary shift reports, operate a mobile radio, evaluate and comprehend as-built drawings and associated equipment operating manuals.
• Must be able to effectively complete M.M.M.S. Crew Cards.
• Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
• Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
• Must provide, at own cost, a Criminal Record Check.
