Job summary

BLG (Borden Ladner Gervais LLP) is seeking an experienced Law Clerk to support a dynamic disputes group. You will assist lawyers on litigation matters across insurance, tort, and construction disputes, draft materials, coordinate with clients and experts, and help advance cases through all stages of proceedings.

You will contribute to a collaborative team, mentor junior clerks, and uphold excellent client service.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a Law Clerk role with a focus on litigation.
  • Strong knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure; Federal Court experience is an asset.
  • College Law Clerk Diploma or ILCO Certificate; university degree is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support lawyers with matters in insurance, tort, and construction disputes.
  • Prepare client reports and engage in direct client communications on ongoing matters.
  • Drive litigation files by drafting, managing discovery, coordinating with clients, counsel and experts, and advancing through all stages.
  • Collaborate with the team and mentor junior law clerks and students.
  • Maintain high standards of client service and file organization.

Purpose of Role

You will be a key member of a dynamic group of lawyers, law clerks and legal support staff, providing the highest level of service to our clients, while having the opportunity to cultivate your skills as part of our successful national Disputes Group, within Canada’s premier full-service law firm. This role is replacing a current vacancy.

Key Responsibilities and Skills
  • Play a critical role in assisting our lawyers with matters relating to all aspects of litigation, including but not limited to the areas of insurance and tort liability and commercial and construction disputes.
  • You will prepare client reports and engage in direct client communications relating to ongoing matters.
  • Drive litigation files forward by delivering high-quality drafting, managing discovery, coordinating with clients, counsel and experts, and advancing complex matters through all stages of proceedings.
  • Collaborate and contribute as an important member of the team and provide unwavering commitment to excellent client service.
  • Work as a member of a collaborative team to mentor and share your knowledge with students, associates and junior law clerks.
Key Competencies
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Law Clerk role with a focus on litigation
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Court experience an asset
  • College Law Clerk Diploma or Institute of Law Clerks Ontario Certificate University degree is an asset
  • Knowledge of iManage, Case Center (formerly CaseLines), ACL, Kofax PDF, Word, Excel and OutlookØ
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skillsØ
  • Initiative and expertise to drive highly effective file management and seek direction when appropriateØ
  • High level organization and time management skills
  • A team player with a strong work ethic and growth mindset

The expected salary range for this position is $65,000 - $95,000, depending on level of experience, region/location, and other factors.
