Job summary

Kinectrics Inc. is seeking a Director of Waste Characterization to lead the waste characterization process at the Chalk River site. The role emphasizes NDA/NDE expertise, regulatory understanding, and a strong safety culture in a major nuclear program.

The successful candidate will manage cross-functional teams, ensure compliance with Canadian regulations, and drive continuous improvement in characterization workflows on-site at the Chalk River facility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or other relevant discipline.
• Minimum 10 years of experience with a master’s degree or 15 years with a bachelor’s degree.
• Strong understanding of NDA and NDE systems.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Canadian security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Leads and manages the waste characterization process from sampling, packaging, shipment and analyses to determine disposal path.
• Uses NDA and NDE methods when appropriate.
• Ensures waste characterization does not inhibit disposal and that cleanup occurs.
• Develops and implements strategies to accelerate end-state achievement and reduce liability and risk.
• Develops schedules for characterization activities aligned with the Annual Program of Work and Budget.
• Writes and reviews documentation such as Data Quality Objectives and Characterization Plans.

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

• Leads andmanagesthe waste characterization process, including procedures for sampling, packaging, shipment, and analyses of waste todeterminethe best pathway to disposal.
• UsesNDA and NDE methods whenappropriate.
• Ensuresthat wastecharacterizationdoes not inhibit disposal ofwasteandthatcleanup occurs.
• Assistsindeveloping and implementing strategies to accelerate achievement ofend states, enabling long-termplanning and reductionsin liability and risk.
• Helpsdevelop schedules for characterization activities to align with mission milestonesestablishedin the Annual Program of Work and Budget.
• Writes,revisesand reviews characterization and operational documentssuch as Data Quality Objectives, Waste Characterization Plans, Characterization Work Plans, Operating Procedures, Project Documentation and Training Plans.
• Assistsindevelopmentof an intermediate-level waste certification process andsubsequentrelevant training for waste characterization specialists.
• Leads analysis of data using specialized software to presentaccurateand conciseinformation about the characteristics and management options for waste.
• Ensuressufficient resources andappropriate jobroles are in place to fulfill the mission and work with senior management to develop a creative and proactive plan to recruit andretainqualified personnel.
• Helps the VP, DWM, and otherwasteprogram stafftobreak down and address problems and challenges,focusing on a proactive approach thatanticipatespotential risks and prepares mitigation in advance.
• Fostersa strong nuclear safety culture thatemphasizes toemployees the critical role they play in protecting each other’s health and safety as well asthe public and the environment.
• Helps build a culture of transformation thatfocuses employeesonthesafe and effective acceleration of end-state completion anddevelops a mindset for continuous improvement and openness to change.
• Interfaces with a range of support service groups such asindustrialhygieneandradiationprotection and others on thewasteprogram staff.
• Applies industry best practices and lessons learned from successfulnuclear decommissioning and waste management programs in Canada and the United States.
• Monitors technological developments in waste characterization equipment and helps evaluate their suitability for CNL.
• Providessupport to VP, DWM, in communicating the status and progress of theWaste Characterization Program to key stakeholders such asAtomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL),the regulator,host communities, Indigenous Nations and communities,and other members of thegeneral public.
• Performs other duties as assigned bytheVP,DWM.

What You Need to Succeed

• Abachelor'sdegreeinengineering,business, or other relevantdisciplineisrequired.An advanceddegree inarelevant disciplineisdesired.
• Aminimumof10yearsofexperienceisrequiredfor those with a master’s degree,of 15 years of experience for those with a bachelor’s degree.
• Must have a strong understanding of NDA and NDE systems.
• TheabilitytoobtainandmaintainaCanadiansecurityclearanceisrequired.
• Experience working with AECL or other Canadian regulatory bodies is strongly desired.
• Canadian citizenship is strongly desired.
• Must live in or be willing torelocate tonear the Chalk River Site.All work will be done on site. No remote work ispermitted.

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
