Job summary

The Royal in Ottawa is seeking a Director, Transformation and Risk Management to provide strategic leadership across enterprise transformation, risk and compliance, and emergency preparedness. You will partner with Executives to drive performance, governance, policy, and workforce planning in a complex healthcare setting.

The role requires 10+ years of leadership experience in healthcare transformation, with advanced financial acumen and change-management expertise.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (MHA, MBA, MPH).
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare transformation, risk management, or operational leadership within a hospital or healthcare system in Ontario.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for enterprise transformation, organizational planning, risk management, compliance, and emergency preparedness across The Royal.
  • Lead enterprise strategic planning and transformation initiatives aligned with the hospital's strategic plan.
  • Oversee Enterprise Risk Management framework, risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and reporting across clinical, operational, financial, labour relations, and technology domains.
  • Lead emergency management, readiness activities, and interagency partnerships; ensure compliance with standards and legislation.
  • Oversee Epic program sustainability, governance, utilization, and KPI tracking.

Job description

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director, Transformation and Risk Management provides strategic leadership for enterprise transformation, organizational planning, risk management, compliance, emergency preparedness, and corporate initiatives across The Royal.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning & Organizational Transformation

  • Lead enterprise strategic planning, organizational performance, and transformation initiatives aligned with the hospital's strategic plan.
  • Advise senior leadership using data, stakeholder input, and industry insights to support strategic decision-making.
  • Champion change management, innovation, continuous improvement, and organizational learning.
  • Build partnerships with healthcare, government, academic, and community stakeholders.
  • Prepare strategic recommendations and reports for the Executive Leadership Team, Board Committees and Board of Directors.
  • Lead and continuously improve the Enterprise Risk Management framework.
  • Oversee risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and reporting across clinical, operational, financial, labour relations, and technology domains.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, hospital policies, and collective agreements.
  • Partner with Legal Services, HR, Labour Relations, and technology leaders to strengthen governance, policy management, privacy, and compliance.

Emergency Management

  • Provide strategic oversight of emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Accreditation Canada standards and applicable legislation.
  • Lead organizational readiness activities, emergency exercises, and external emergency management partnerships.
  • Oversee hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) activities and organizational readiness programs
  • Support Incident Management System (IMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) readiness and leadership development.
  • Lead portfolio planning, budgeting, financial stewardship, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Develop business cases, cost-benefit analyses, and ROI evaluations to support strategic investments.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop staff while supporting workforce planning, recruitment, and performance management.

Epic Program Sustainability

  • Lead post-go-live Epic governance, optimization, and long-term sustainability.
  • Monitor Epic utilization and adoption metrics and prioritize enhancement requests.
  • Ensure Epic capabilities are fully leveraged, including Key Performance Indicators and system reliability.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Master of Health Administration (MHA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Health (MPH)).
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare transformation, risk management, or operational leadership within a hospital or healthcare system in Ontario.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder change initiatives with measurable impact.
  • Preferred: Certified Healthcare Executive (CHE), Professional designations e.g., Project Management Professional (PMP), Canadian Risk Management (CRM) or Prosci Change Management Certification (PROSCI)

Knowledge and Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of Ontario's healthcare regulatory environment, funding models, risk governance, and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills in a complex healthcare environment.
  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate with executive leaders, clinicians, union representatives, and healthcare partners.
  • Advanced financial and business acumen, including business case development, budgeting, and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience leading large-scale transformation, project, and change management initiatives.

Language Requirements

English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingual (French/English) is preferred.
