Job summary

Aecon, in collaboration with CanAtom, is delivering the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Refurbishment Project. The Project Director will lead a multi-disciplinary team, drive safe and efficient execution, and manage complex interfaces with Owners, Contractors, and partners to deliver the RFBR program across Units 5–8.

We seek a senior leader with 20+ years in nuclear refurbishments, strong safety culture, and proven executive experience in cross-organizational settings.

Qualifications

• BSc in Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 20+ years of experience in managing major refurbishment or large scale Nuclear projects.
• Understanding of Nuclear Safety Culture and INPO principles.
• Must have experience in the Nuclear Market.
• Heavy technical requirements on welding.
• Knowledge of INPO practices and principles.

Responsibilities

• Lead complex team with multi-disciplinary functions across project controls, operations, finance, LR, etc.
• Focus on proactively improving execution through innovation, lessons learned and productivity improvements.
• Manage interactions with challenging clients to maintain relationships and resolve conflicts.

• Develop an execution organization capable of delivering major refurbishment projects.
• Provide high-level executive management exposure to deliver profitable growth.
• Demonstrate deep understanding of Nuclear Industry requirements for Owners and Contractors.

What Is The Opportunity

CanAtom, a joint venture between AtkinsRéalis and Aecon, is delivering the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Refurbishment Project under a collaborative contract with Ontario Power Generation. The joint venture is underway to complete the retube, feeder, and boiler replacement (RFBR) of Units 5–8. Building on the successful delivery of the Darlington Refurbishment Project, the CanAtom team brings proven experience in safely executing complex nuclear projects that support Ontario’s clean energy future.

The Project Director reports to the Executive Steering Committee and shall be accountable for the responsibilities below.

• Effectively managing interactions with challenging clients to maintain positive relationships, resolve conflicts, and achieve desired outcomes, fostering long-term partnerships.
• Effectively collaborating with partners from different organizations to achieve common goals, leveraging diverse expertise and resources while navigating complex relationships and shared responsibilities.
• Develop an appropriate execution organization that has the ability to execute major refurbishment projects.
• High level of executive management exposure which will include having built, managed and sustained a high performing business to deliver profitable growth.
• Significant experience and understanding of the Nuclear Industry and its approaches, including requirements of both Owners and Contractors.

What You Bring To The Team

• BSc in Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 20+ years of experience in managing major refurbishment or large scale Nuclear projects.
• Understanding of Nuclear Safety Culture and INPO principles, must have experience in the Nuclear Market.
• Heavy technical requirements on welding.
• Need to demonstrate Safety as the paramount value and lead by example.
• Contract Management and Risk Management.
• Must be knowledgeable of INPO (Institute of Nuclear Power Operation) practices and principles, and practice same.
• Must have a full appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry.
• Experience as a Nuclear Operator is important to the execution of the project from the standpoint of the various phases of the project.
• Understanding of steam generator design, materials, and maintenance.
• Experience with heavy lifting and transportation equipment is crucial.
• Knowledge of and existing relationships within the nuclear sector.
• High level of executive management exposure which will include having built, managed and sustained a high performing business to deliver profitable growth.
• Significant experience and understanding of the Nuclear Industry and its approaches, including requirements of both Owners and Contractors.
• Able to handle high pressure on delivery dates.

Other Qualifications

• Due to the nature of work conducted mandated nuclear export controls requirements must be met for employment.

Those with a valid Ontario Power Generation security clearance are strongly preferred.
