The Opportunity
We’re looking to fill a Director, Product position at RFA Bank of Canada!
The Product Director is responsible for leading the strategic development, management, and optimization of RFA Bank's product portfolio across both credit and deposit products. With a primary focus on residential mortgage lending and complementary credit products, as well as deposit solutions, this role will drive product innovation, market competitiveness, and revenue growth. The Product Director will be a strategic, growth‑oriented leader who thrives in a dynamic entrepreneurial environment and brings deep expertise from Canada's federally regulated financial services sector to position RFA Bank as a challenger and market leader in the markets it serves.
Core Responsibilities
As the Director, Product, you will:
- Develop and execute comprehensive product strategies for credit products (residential mortgages, HELOCs, reverse mortgages, and other lending products) and deposit products aligned with RFA Bank's growth objectives and challenger bank positioning.
- Lead the end‑to‑end product lifecycle from conception through launch, growth, maturity, and optimization or retirement, ensuring products remain competitive throughout their lifecycle.
- Conduct market research, competitive benchmarking, and voice‑of‑customer analysis to identify product gaps, emerging opportunities, and competitive threats in the Canadian banking landscape.
- Establish product performance metrics, KPIs, and financial targets to track success and drive continuous improvement.
- Develop and maintain product roadmaps that balance strategic priorities, market demands, regulatory requirements, and resource constraints.
- Define pricing strategies and revenue models for products to optimize profitability while maintaining market competitiveness.
- Collaborate with the CRTO to align product strategies with broader revenue and transformation initiatives.
- Champion innovation and agile product development methodologies to accelerate time‑to‑market.
- Cross functional collaboration and leadership, partnering with Sales, Marketing, Operations, Technology, Risk Management, Finance and other teams as designated by your Manager from time to time to ensure successful development of objectives.
- Activities focused on the required market intelligence & customer insights for effective product development and ongoing management (e.g. customer needs, product performance data, competitive benchmarking, emerging market opportunities, etc.).
Residential Mortgage & Products Leadership
- Oversee the development, management, and performance optimization of the Bank's alternative residential mortgage products.
- Oversee the development of complementary credit products and suite of deposit products that meet evolving customer needs and expand RFA Bank's addressable market.
- Monitor mortgage market trends, regulatory changes (OSFI B‑20/B‑21 guidelines, stress test requirements), and competitive dynamics to ensure product relevance, compliance, and market leadership.
- Partner with broker channel partners and develop strong relationships within internal sales teams.
- Ensure products meet the needs of client segments while maintaining appropriate risk‑adjusted returns.
- Collaborate with Treasury and Finance teams to align deposit strategies with liquidity management, funding requirements, and ALM objectives.
- Leverage digital channels to enhance deposit product distribution and customer acquisition.
Product Governance & Risk Management
- Establish product governance frameworks to ensure consistent decision‑making, risk management, and performance tracking across the product portfolio.
- Conduct comprehensive product risk assessments and ensure appropriate risk mitigation strategies are in place for all products.
- Oversee product compliance with all relevant regulations including OSFI guidelines, FCAC requirements, provincial consumer protection legislation, and internal policies.
- Manage product documentation including product specifications, business requirements documents (BRDs), business cases, and approval materials.
- Ensure products align with RFA Bank's risk appetite, strategic objectives, and brand positioning.
- Lead product review and approval processes through appropriate governance committees.
- Monitor product profitability, portfolio quality, and risk metrics on an ongoing basis.
Financial Management & Business Case Development
- Develop comprehensive business cases and financial models for new products, significant product enhancements, and portfolio optimization initiatives.
- Manage product P&L and demonstrate budget accountability for the product portfolio.
- Conduct ongoing financial analysis of product performance including revenue, volume, margins, profitability, customer acquisition costs (CAC), and lifetime value (LTV).
- Make data‑driven recommendations for product investments, divestments, or optimization initiatives based on rigorous financial analysis.
- Present product performance updates, strategic recommendations, and investment proposals to the CRTO.
- Monitor and report on key product metrics and their contribution to overall bank performance.
- Build, lead, and mentor a high‑performing product management team with diverse skill sets and backgrounds.
- Develop staffing plans anticipating short‑, medium‑ and long‑term needs as RFA Bank scales.
- Motivate, inspire, and coach team members to assist them in exceeding their objectives and developing their careers.
- Lead and participate in annual performance reviews, addressing areas of strength and improvement, and providing constructive feedback.
- Foster a culture of innovation, customer‑centricity, experimentation, data‑driven decision making, and continuous learning within the product team.
- Develop succession planning and talent development strategies for the product function.
- Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion within the product organization.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
- 10+ years of progressive experience in product management or product development within the Canadian financial services industry.
- 7+ years of experience at a federally regulated financial institution (Schedule I or Schedule II bank, or federal credit union) with demonstrated success in product development, launch, and management.
- Proven expertise in residential mortgage products, including conventional mortgages, HELOCs, alternative lending solutions, and strong understanding of broker distribution channels.
- Strong knowledge of deposit products, funding strategies, and liability management within Canadian banking.
- Experience in mid‑market Canadian banking, alternative lending, or credit union sectors strongly preferred.
- 3+ years of people management experience with demonstrated ability to build, develop, and lead high‑performing teams.
- Track record of successfully launching and managing products through full lifecycle with measurable business impact.
- MBA or equivalent advanced degree preferred; undergraduate degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or related field required.
- Deep understanding of OSFI regulations (including B‑20/B‑21 guidelines), Canadian banking compliance requirements, and consumer protection legislation.
- Experience working in fast‑paced, growth‑oriented, entrepreneurial environments where agility and adaptability are essential.
