Job summary

Scotiabank in Toronto is seeking a Director of Operational Risk for GBM to ensure robust governance across enterprise risk practices and to challenge first and second line controls in line with the Enterprise Framework. You will lead the evolution of the operational risk framework, coordinate with U.S.

Enterprise Risk and Global Operational Risk teams, and drive risk reporting, KRIs, RCSA processes, and risk taxonomy development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent required.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in financial institutions with significant operational risk or related controls.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and evolve Scotiabank's operational risk governance framework, including incident reporting, RCSAs, and risk taxonomy development.
  • Lead second line oversight to challenge first line controls and support remediation actions.

The objective of this position is to ensure that the GBM operations of The Bank of Nova Scotia have appropriate governance in place to effectively challenge operational management and governance activities that align with the Enterprise Framework and meets local supervisory expectations.

  • Effectively challenging the businesses, finance, operational, data risk management, divisional coverage and providing senior management with an independent assessment of businesses’ operational, divisional risk profile, and
  • Identifying new and emerging operational risk themes based on internal and external data.

The Director is acting as the second line function, will challenge the effectiveness of the design of first line operated controls and monitoring methods, identify control deficiencies, if any, and assist the 1LOD owners with developing appropriate corrective action plans. The incumbent will also partner with Business Risk Management to further assist with developing appropriate corrective actions.The Director will also be expected to lead the evolution of the operational risk framework as part of Scotiabank’s broader efforts to enhance its risk management capabilities.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Maintain and enhance Scotiabank’s operational risk management framework, supporting standards and procedures covering identification, measurement, monitoring and management of operational risk. Key parts of the framework include incident reports, Risk Control Self Assessments (RCSAs), operational risk deep dives, scenario analyses, identification and monitoring of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), and the development and refinement of risk taxonomies.
  • Integral member responsible for the execution of day-to-day responsibilities owned by the operational risk team including, but not limited, to the following:
    • Effective challenge of businesses’ operational oversight activities including, but not limited to, completed internal operational risk reports, RCSAs, and scenario analyses
  • Partner with the broader U.S. Enterprise Risk team and the Global Operational Risk Team to ensure that U.S. Operational Risk is aligned with global standards and harmonized with other risk disciplines in the U.S.
  • Lead efforts (e.g., training, communications) to enhance the profile of operational risk and reinforce the company’s broader risk culture.
  • Provide support for the timely and accurate escalation of review findings and facilitate analysis for remediation.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent required.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience working at a financial institution, with at least 10 years’ experience in Operational Risk Management, or related Compliance, Risk Management or Audit experience
  • Experience with Risk Identification and Assessment and/or RCSA process a must.
  • Deep understanding of the regulatory expectation for U.S. Operational Risk Management
  • Hands‑on experience developing and producing management reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills with multiple stakeholders both internal and external
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at a strategic level.
  • Ability to solve problems, multi-task and manage changing priorities.
