Job description

Valsoft is looking for a Director of Product Engineering to join our team in either Canada or the US.

ABOUT VALSOFT CORP.

Established in Canada in 2015, Valsoft has grown to a global portfolio of 118+ companies, acquiring and developing vertical market software companies, enabling each business to deliver the best mission‑critical solutions for customers in their respective industries. A key tenet of Valsoft’s philosophy is to invest in well‑established businesses and foster an entrepreneurial environment that molds companies into leaders in their respective industries. Valsoft looks to buy, hold and create value through long‑term partnerships with existing management.

INVESTMENT APPROACH

Unlike private equity and venture capital firms, we are entrepreneurs who buy, enhance and grow software businesses. That’s right; we don’t sell businesses. We form a strategic alliance with existing management teams. We recognize the dedication and perseverance required to create a firm and place a premium on customers’ and workers’ well‑being over short‑term goals.

CULTURE

Valsoft is more than just a place to work; we’re a team. We mean it when we say people are our greatest assets, so investing in them is our number one priority. We create an environment where our employees feel first‑day‑on‑the‑job excitement, day after day, creating a culture of high performers and collaboration. We celebrate our milestones, and we’re proud of them. We Dream Big, Stay Humble and Stay Hungry.

One of our Valsoft companies is seeking a Director of Product Development to lead our engineering and product teams through a period of stabilization and modernization. This hands‑on leadership role will focus 70% on stabilizing our legacy VB.NET/WinForms/SQL Server platform and 30% on executing an API‑first modernization strategy using .NET Core, AWS, and open‑source technologies.

The Director will act as a player‑coach—approximately 30% in code—mentoring a small distributed team, improving release predictability, reducing support issues, and driving modernization through practical design and disciplined delivery. The ideal candidate combines deep technical fluency with strong people leadership and commercial awareness.

Responsibilities include overseeing software delivery, establishing CI/CD and quality practices, leading API‑layer development, partnering cross‑functionally with infrastructure and operations, and aligning technical outcomes with business objectives. The Director will also refactor the product management function to strengthen technical alignment.

We operate with a lean structure and high accountability. Our culture values direct communication, curiosity, and disciplined execution. Each team member owns their work from concept through delivery, and everyone contributes to improving quality, stability, and customer satisfaction.

The Director of Product Development will provide both strategic and hands‑on leadership—coaching junior engineers, strengthening product alignment, and fostering collaboration across development, infrastructure, and operations. The team is entering a pivotal transformation phase, modernizing a proven legacy platform into a modern, API‑driven architecture that will define the next generation of our products.

Must Have
  • Minimum 5 years of experience leading enterprise‑scale software delivery teams (serving 200+ customers or equivalent complexity)
  • Proven record of stabilizing and maintaining legacy enterprise systems in production environments
  • Deep, hands‑on technical experience with .NET, SQL Server, and Windows‑based architectures
  • At least 5 years managing small to midsize distributed or offshore development teams, with a focus on mentoring and accountability
  • Demonstrated ability to implement pragmatic engineering practices including CI/CD pipelines, version control standards, automated testing, and observability
  • Experience restoring release predictability, improving uptime, and reducing production defects through process and culture improvements
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, capable of translating between technical detail and business outcomes
  • Commercial awareness: understands how engineering decisions affect customer satisfaction, renewals, and profitability
  • Leadership style centered on servant leadership, urgency, and disciplined execution
  • Working knowledge of modern design principles such as Domain‑Driven Design, CLEAN architecture, and modular system design
Nice to Have
  • Experience leading modernization or re‑platforming initiatives, including API‑first development and strangler‑fig transitions
  • Exposure to cloud migration (preferably AWS) and containerized deployments
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL, Node.js, or open‑source components used alongside .NET
  • Background in compliance‑heavy or public‑sector software environments (e.g., justice, land records, or municipal systems)
  • Understanding of DevOps, Lean Product Development, and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience using AI productivity tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, test automation assistants) and guiding responsible team adoption
  • Prior exposure to private equity or post‑acquisition operating models, balancing operational rigor with commercial urgency
  • Flexible working schedule
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Professional Development & Training Reimbursement Program
  • Flexible paid time off
  • High‑Growth Environment – Work in a fast‑scaling portfolio with constant learning opportunities
  • Collaborative Culture – Work with dynamic, forward‑thinking professionals who value curiosity and innovation
  • AI & Tech‑Driven Mindset – Be at the forefront of finance automation and innovation
  • Global Exposure – Engage with businesses across North America, Europe, and beyond
