What is the Opportunity?

RBC is seeking a charismatic and experienced Director of Engineering to lead the development of the IT Risk and Controls Platform (Project Walrus). This platform is critical to enhancing RBC’s risk management and compliance capabilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in React, Java (Kotlin), and Python, along with proven experience in designing and delivering internal applications at RBC. They must be a strong people leader, capable of mentoring co‑op students and new graduates while driving engineering excellence.


What will you do?


  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of the IT Risk and Controls Platform (Project Walrus), ensuring alignment with RBC’s strategic goals.

  • Oversee a team of engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment while delivering high-quality software solutions.

  • Lead code and design reviews to ensure adherence to best practices, scalability, and maintainability.

  • Mentor and develop junior team members, including co‑op students and new graduates, to build a strong engineering culture.

  • Ensure adherence to RBC’s internal processes, including Helios, Disaster Recovery (DR), and Identity and Access Management (IAM).

  • Drive technical decision‑making, emphasizing scalable, secure, and efficient architecture using React, Java (Kotlin), and Python.

  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (e.g., Risk, Compliance, Security) to deliver solutions that meet regulatory and business requirements.

  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure successful delivery.

  • Act as a charismatic engineering leader, inspiring and motivating the team to achieve excellence.


What do you need to succeed

Must have:



  • 10+ years in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

  • Strong expertise in React, Java (Kotlin), and Python. Experience with cloud technologies and microservices architecture is an asset.

  • Proven track record of building internal applications at RBC, with deep knowledge of RBC processes (Helios, DR, IAM).

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor engineering teams, including co‑op students and new graduates.

  • Strong software design and architecture skills, with a focus on scalability, security, and performance.

  • Experience leading code and design reviews to maintain high engineering standards.

  • Charismatic leadership style, excellent communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field
