Overview

Toronto Hydro is looking for a dynamic and strategic leader to join our team as Director, Litigation, Privacy & Compliance. In this role, you will lead the development and execution of enterprise-wide strategies in litigation, compliance, privacy, and claims management.

As Director, you will provide expert guidance on complex legal, regulatory, and privacy matters, often involving high visibility and significant organizational risk. This includes representing Toronto Hydro in legal proceedings, managing sensitive claims and privacy incidents, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders such as legal counsel, regulators, customers, contractors, and insurers.

You will also play a key role in shaping policy, driving continuous improvement in governance practices, and fostering a culture of compliance and accountability across the organization. This position is ideal for a strategic thinker with expertise in litigation and regulatory environments, a proactive approach to risk management, and the leadership capability to navigate evolving regulatory landscape. and support the organization60s long-term success.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the organization’s overall strategy for litigation, claims management, legal compliance, and privacy governance, maintaining alignment with applicable laws, industry standards, and organizational objectives.
  • Direct the litigation portfolio, including escalated claims, personal injury, property damage, third-party liability, and complex matters such as class actions. Provide legal guidance and identify potential litigation risk.
  • Oversee the end-to-end claims process, including intake, investigation, negotiation, and resolution. Determine appropriate resolution pathways and manage high-profile incidents with strategic oversight.
  • Develop and implement legal injects into the organizational compliance framework and provide comprehensive interpretations of legal compliance obligations and potential non-compliances.
  • Lead the privacy compliance framework in accordance with municipal, provincial, and federal legislation (e.g., MFIPPA), and manage relationships with oversight bodies.
  • Provide legal oversight for internal investigations and proactively identify and mitigate legal, compliance, and privacy risks.
  • Oversee internal and external tracking and reporting across all program areas, including status, risks, opportunities, and stakeholder communications.
  • Monitor emerging legal and regulatory trends and drive continuous improvement in compliance, governance, and risk management practices.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Undergraduate degree in Law, Business, Finance or related field of study.
  • Master’s degree in related field, preferred.
  • Law Degree and membership in good standing as a Lawyer in the Law Society of Ontario / Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
  • Ten (10) years of progressive legal experience, including leadership in litigation, compliance, privacy, and / or claims management.
  • Deep understanding of litigation, regulatory frameworks, privacy legislation (e.g., MFIPPA), and claims resolution.
  • Proven ability to manage complex legal matters, including class actions, claims or compliance issues requiring strategic oversight.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing legal strategies that align with organizational goals and mitigate risk.
  • Exceptional ability to engage and influence internal and external stakeholders, including senior leadership, legal counsel, and regulators.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making capabilities in high-risk and time-sensitive situations.

This position is based in a hybrid environment allowing for remote work two days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite Tuesday to Thursday. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
