Qualifications

Director, Investment Services

Alberta Innovates is seeking a Director, Investment Services. This role will be responsible for planning, implementing and leading corporate due diligence to support Alberta Innovates’ investment decisions. The primary responsibility of the role is to oversee the due diligence conducted on investment applications to drive evidence‑based operational, capital and investment decisions. The successful applicant will bring deep investment expertise, including venture capital and private equity, people leadership experience, and the ability to ensure activities are compliant with corporate policies and applicable regulatory requirements. The role will also leverage market insights to support non‑dilutive and dilutive investment strategies including structuring, evaluating, and facilitating co‑investment and syndication opportunities.

This is a permanent position and will be based out of our Edmonton or Calgary Research Park office. The position is eligible for hybrid work.

More Information About the Position
  • Develop and oversee the review, analysis, and approval process of investment applications, ensuring rigorous evaluation and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Drive the financial, business, and technological feasibility assessments of funding applications, delivering evidence‑based recommendations for investment decisions.
  • Monitor and continuously improve investment processes to enhance flexibility, efficiency, and effectiveness, while maintaining compliance with policies and standards.
  • Design and execute strategies grounded in grant funding and venture capital best practices, fostering co‑investment partnerships, syndication models, and capital access initiatives.
  • Develop and execute market intelligence strategies to identify trends and opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, industry partners, and government stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the Investment Services team, including goal setting, performance management, and professional development.
  • Offer expert guidance to senior leadership on investment activities and align priorities with organizational goals.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Science or Engineering. Extended work experience may be substituted for education credentials if appropriate.
  • CFA, CPA or equivalent professional certification would be an asset.
  • Minimum of 10 years of business management experience in consulting, private equity or venture capital, commercial/investment banking or working with or for a technology based Small to Medium Enterprise (SME).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in investment process management and/or portfolio management.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a research or early‑stage venture‑orientated environment.
  • Project Management experience and/or PMP certification would be an asset.
