Overview

The Director of Finance at Quarterhill is a senior leadership role, essential to shaping the financial strategy of the company and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Reporting directly to the VP of Finance, this position is responsible for developing financial strategies aligned with company objectives, overseeing financial reporting, compliance functions, and managing the accounting team. The Director of Finance plays a critical role in driving financial excellence and innovation across the organization.

Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing finance team, promoting a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Directly manage the Quarterhill corporate accounting team, as well as the accounts payable and payment functions for the consolidated business.
  • Oversee performance management, recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of finance team members.

2. Financial Strategy and Planning:

  • Develop and implement costing methodologies to accurately allocate direct and overhead costs to projects, services and products.
  • Analyze cost drivers, resource consumption patterns and production efficiencies to optimize profitability.
  • Support the VP of Finance and CFO in long‑term financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.

3. Financial Reporting and Compliance:

  • Oversee the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Manage and coordinate the company’s external audit.
  • Prepare position papers and provide guidance on IFRS compliance areas.
  • Manage the financial reporting process, including the preparation of MD&A, financial disclosures, and other public company requirements.
  • Supervise the financial consolidation process, ensuring data accuracy and adherence to internal policies and external regulations.
  • Coordinate with subsidiary finance teams to meet corporate reporting timelines.
  • Assist in preparing financial materials for investor relations, equity research/analyst calls, press releases, earnings calls, and corporate fact sheets.
  • Communicate financial results to senior management, providing insights and actionable recommendations.

4. Treasury Management:

  • Oversee cash flow forecasting and working capital optimization to support business operations.
  • Manage accounts receivable to ensure timely collections.
  • Optimize accounts payable processes, aligning vendor payments with customer receipts.
  • Support the VP of Finance in managing company debt instruments, including covenant compliance reporting.
  • Administer the company’s banking platforms, ensuring appropriate controls and user management.
  • Implement strategies for liquidity management and risk mitigation.

5. Financial Systems and Process Optimization

  • Oversee the maintenance of financial systems and software, ensuring they meet the company’s needs.
  • Lead initiatives to streamline financial processes, improve efficiency, and enhance accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies that can optimize financial operations.

6. Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including Operations, Sales, Procurement, People & Culture and Project Management to drive alignment between financial objectives and operational priorities.

7. Other duties as required.

8. Travel approximately 5%

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
  • CPA designation required.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of financial management principles, including financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management.
  • Experience working in and solid understanding of project‑based businesses.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in IFRS.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, with the ability to effectively lead and develop a team.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Proven ability to work with executive level leadership.
  • NetSuite experience considered an asset.
  • Experience with Anaplan (previously Sturnis365) or Workiva also considered an asset.
