A Director of Construction at a large developer is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the entire construction process for a portfolio of large-scale projects, from conception to completion. The position requires extensive experience in construction management, project delivery, and strategy.
A Director of Construction is responsible for strategic planning and project oversight, including setting the vision for multiple projects, approving designs and budgets, making high-level decisions, and reporting on progress. The role involves leadership and team management, providing direction to construction professionals, mentoring teams, and leading project meetings. Financial management is also a key responsibility, overseeing budgets, forecasts, and contracts, while also identifying cost-effective solutions. Additionally, the role includes risk management and compliance, identifying risks, ensuring projects meet regulations and standards, and conducting inspections. Stakeholder relations are vital, acting as the primary contact for external parties and building relationships. Finally, the director is expected to drive innovation and process improvement by staying current on industry trends.
Working in close collaboration with the development team, the director of construction is responsible for the strategic planning and oversight of the construction phase, including delivery and post‑construction matters (ie. warrantee). In addition, the Director of Construction shall support the development team through the preconstruction process by providing input on the project design from a constructability, logistics and cost perspective as the project advances through the schematic and design development phases.
