Job summary

BMO Capital Partners is seeking a Director to lead transactions from origination through closing, including due diligence, structuring, negotiation and portfolio oversight. The role requires navigating multiple industries and building strong relationships with internal and external partners across Canada and the U.S.

The successful candidate will mentor junior staff, manage several concurrent transactions, and contribute to strategic growth in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in Investment Banking, Private Equity, Venture Capital, Leveraged Finance, or related areas.
• Ability to navigate multiple industries with understanding of financing needs of private companies.
• Strong knowledge of capital structure and principal investing.
• Comfortable working in a high-growth, fast-paced environment.
• Proactive relationship-building and independent deal leadership.
• Team player with mentoring responsibilities and talent development mindset.

Responsibilities

• Lead evaluation and due diligence of fund investments, direct equity and subordinated debt opportunities.

• Lead legal documentation review and negotiation.
• Monitor portfolio companies and manage relationships with management.
• Build relationships with private equity, growth equity and VC firms, across Canada and US.

Role Description

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team of investment professionals in Toronto. The Director will be responsible for leading transactions from start to finish, including origination, structuring, due diligence, negotiation and closing of new investment opportunities. As a Director, you will assist the Managing Directors with coverage for newly onboarded clients and work closely with a variety of internal partners across BMO. You will work alongside the Managing Directors to help mentor a team of associates to evaluate new investment opportunities and manage/monitor the portfolio. The day‑to‑day responsibilities of the Director will include:

• Lead the evaluation and due diligence of fund investments, direct equity and subordinated debt opportunities;
• Present investment opportunities to the Investment Committee and defend the valuation of investments quarterly to the Valuation Committee;
• Lead legal documentation review and negotiation;
• Monitor existing portfolio companies; develop relationships with management to stay up to date on performance and outlook;
• Build relationships and develop a strong network with private equity, growth equity and venture capital firms;
• Collaborate with colleagues across BMO Financial Group, including the Commercial Bank and Capital Markets, in Canada and the U.S.;
• Support BMO’s network of Commercial Banking Relationship Managers by pitching BMO Capital Partners’ capabilities and evaluating potential opportunities;
• Monitor investment trends, develop investment theses and pitch on potential investment ideas; and,
• Assist in special projects as required.

Qualifications

The following qualifications are a must:

• 7+ years of experience within Investment Banking, Private Equity, Venture Capital,Leveraged Finance, or other relevant areas;
• Ability to navigate between industries with a deep understanding of the financing needs of private companies from early to mature stage;
• Solid understanding of capital structure and principal investing, very strong analytical skills;
• Enjoys working in a high growth and fast‑paced environment;
• Confidence, presence, and determination to develop new relationships and succeed in a very dynamic and demanding business environment;
• Ability to work independently and lead a number of concurrent transactions;
• Experience working in a multiple member deal team context and a strong team‑player mentality and a leader who will take an active role in developing our future talent; and,
• Proactive attitude, deep sense of ownership and initiative.

The following qualifications will be considered an asset:

• CFA, CPA, CA, CBV designation or MBA;

$85,500.00 - $185,000.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance‑based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
