Position Title : Digital Architect
Work Location : Primarily Remote (Meetings in Edmonton as required)
Hours : 36.25 hours / week (7.25 hours / day)
Work Arrangement : Must be available 8 : 15 AM 4 : 30 PM Alberta Time
Duration : 1 years + potential extension (up to 24 months)
Role Summary
The Digital Architect Data serves as the senior technical lead within digital product teams, responsible for shaping architectural vision, guiding solution design, ensuring alignment to GoA technology standards, and supporting iterative delivery of modern digital services. The role involves strategic architectural leadership, hands‑on technical guidance, data architecture oversight, and collaboration across diverse teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead Solution Architecture for Digital Services
- Develop and maintain the overall architecture plan with a strong citizen-centered and agile approach.
- Analyze and document existing system context, integration points, and constraints.
- Provide architectural recommendations, prototypes, and technical discovery insights.
- Deliver iterative, scalable solution designs aligned with GoA standards and the overarching architecture vision.
- Conduct risk, impact, and exposure assessments for proposed solutions.
2. Guide Implementation and Delivery
- Support rapid, iterative delivery cycles to ensure alignment with the target architecture.
- Define tactical integration approaches and future‑state system boundaries.
- Identify and promote reuse of common components, capabilities, and platform services.
- Provide direction for detailed solution design and oversee technical implementation.
- Review code, contribute to development as needed, and mentor technical team members.
3. Contribute to GoA s Architectural Vision
- Help define principles, standards, and metrics for modern digital service delivery.
- Create technical documentation, diagrams, and presentations tailored to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support continuous improvement of digital architecture practices, tools, and processes.
4. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with GoA product owners, 3D team members, and ministry staff.
- Participate actively in field research, backlog refinement, sprint planning, and delivery workflows.
- Ensure architectural decisions support business priorities, technical feasibility, and user needs.
Location & Work Arrangement
- Primarily remote;occasional attendance in Edmonton required (with reasonable notice).
- Must work from within Canada.
- Standard hours : 8 : 15 AM 4 : 30 PM Alberta Time (Monday Friday).
- Travel within Alberta may be required for field research and user interviews (arranged by the Province).
Facilities & Equipment
- For remote work : contractor provides equipment (laptop, software, peripherals).
- For onsite work : the Province provides office space, furniture, and access to systems.
Security & Compliance Requirements
- Criminal Record Check required at no cost to the Province.
- Enhanced Security Clearance required for Justice-related work.
- May require RCMP Top Secret Clearance during the assignment.
- Written provincial approval is required before onboarding any resource.
Mandatory Experience & Qualifications (Must-Have)
Education
- Bachelor s degree in Computer Science or related field (equivalencies considered).
Experience
- 5+ years leading cross-functional agile product teams.
- 8+ years as a Data Architect, Software Architect, or Senior Data Engineer.
- 5+ years leading solution architecture for large-scale digital solutions.
- 4+ years leading domain modeling and database schema design.
- 5+ years demonstrating strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Preferred (Nice-to-Have) Experience
- 3+ years aligning data architecture with enterprise data strategies.
- 3+ years applying data governance frameworks to ensure data quality / security.
- 4+ years applying secure development practices and managing data risks.
- 2+ years enabling data interoperability across platforms and services.
- 5+ years modernizing legacy systems toward modern digital architectures.
- 2+ years experience with containerization, orchestration, IaC tools.
- 2+ years experience with GoA s IT / IM standards or similar public-sector frameworks.
- 2+ years in organizations comparable in size / complexity to the GoA.
- 5+ years working with relational & non-relational databases.
- 4+ years experience architecting data analytics solutions.
