Job summary

CPKC is seeking a Diesel Service Attendant in Thunder Bay, Ontario. This full-time, union position requires inspecting, fueling, and maintaining locomotives, while ensuring safe and efficient rail operations.

Responsibilities include servicing locomotives, testing cab systems, and completing documentation. Must have 1+ year around heavy equipment, a valid CDL, and the ability to work all shifts in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Minimum 1 year experience around heavy equipment.
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) required.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays in all weather.
  • Ability to read and understand safety instructions in English.

  • Fuel, sand, and service locomotives while maintaining safety and readiness.
  • Perform inspections and basic maintenance on locomotives and cab equipment.
  • Evaluate components for reuse or replacement.
  • Clean and maintain locomotive cabs and facilities.
  • Test cab electrical equipment, safety devices, and brake systems.
  • Complete crew-to-crew documentation accurately and per procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned under the collective agreement.

Purpose of the Position

As a Diesel Service Attendant, you play a critical role in ensuring locomotives are safe, fueled, serviced, and ready for operation. In this hands‑on position, you will inspect, move, fuel, clean, test, and perform basic maintenance on locomotive equipment while supporting the safe and efficient movement of rail traffic. Working in a fast‑paced, safety‑focused environment, you will use your mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and commitment to operational excellence to help keep our railway running smoothly.

Position Accountabilities
  • Safely fuel, sand, and service locomotives, ensuring adequate fuel levels, traction sand, and cab amenities are maintained
  • Perform inspections and basic maintenance on locomotives, fuel systems, and cab equipment to support safe and efficient operations
  • Evaluate locomotive components and parts to determine suitability for reuse or replacement
  • Clean and maintain locomotive cabs, including walls, windows, floors, and washroom facilities, to ensure a safe and professional work environment
  • Test and verify the functionality of cab electrical equipment, safety devices, and brake systems in accordance with operating requirements
  • Configure cab brake systems based on train operations and ensure all safety inspections are completed before service
  • Accurately complete crew-to-crew documentation and maintain compliance with company procedures, regulatory requirements, and operational standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned and in accordance with the applicable collective agreement
Position Requirements
  • High school diploma or general equivalency
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Minimum 1 year experience working around heavy equipment
  • Commercial driver’s license
  • Available to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions
  • Ability to pass the required written examinations, read and understand safety instructions, rules, regulations and other written or printed material in English
  • Proven dedication to safety and ability to complete work within guidelines/rules
