Job summary

CPKC, Saskatoon, is seeking a Diesel Mechanic Apprentice to perform preventive and scheduled locomotive maintenance in a fast-paced, safety-focused setting. You will work with qualified mechanics to inspect, repair, and service engines and mechanical systems while developing core diesel skills.

Responsibilities include inspecting locomotives, mobiles, and yard equipment; diagnosing engine faults; following blueprints and manuals; and ensuring safety guidelines.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Pass written examinations and read/understand safety instructions in English.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience as a mechanic, preferably on diesel engines.
• Willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions.
• Demonstrated dedication to safety and ability to follow guidelines.

• Diagnose diesel engine faults and perform repairs per regulations.
• Follow blueprints, drawings and manuals to complete work.
• Evaluate parts for reuse, repair or replacement.
• Modify and construct mechanical assemblies as needed.
• Maintain low voltage locomotive electrical systems.
• Service locomotive cabs, including cleaning and upkeep.
• Operate cranes, forklifts and hand tools as required.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Diesel Mechanic Apprentice performs the completion of preventative and scheduled maintenance on locomotives in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment. Working alongside qualified mechanics, the apprentice will complete inspections, repairs, and servicing while developing core technical skills related to diesel engines and mechanical systems.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Maintain, inspect, service, test and repairs all systems on locomotives, mobile equipment and vehicles used in plant, yard and road service
• Diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and make repairs within regulatory and company guidelines
• Complete work in accordance with blueprints, schematic drawings and service manuals
• Evaluate of parts for reuse, repair or replacement
• Modify and construct mechanical assemblies
• Maintain of low voltage repairs on locomotive electrical systems
• Service locomotive cabs which include cleaning cab walls, locomotive toilets, windows and floors
• Operate equipment such as overhead or mobile cranes, forklifts and hand tools

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or general equivalency
• Valid driver’s license
• Minimum 3 years’ working as a mechanic preferably on diesel engines
• Available to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions
• Ability to pass the required written examinations, read and understand safety instructions, rules, regulations and other written or printed material in English
• Validated dedication to safety and ability to complete work within guidelines/rules
• Strong communication skills (provide clear and concise instructions/directions)

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Medical and Drug Testing

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.
