Job Details

Higher Ground Consulting, an Englobe company (HGC) is seeking an intermediate level Hydrotechnical Engineer to help lead the development and execution of hydrotechnical engineering services to support HGC?s ongoing projects and clients, as well as assist in building up our water resource engineering team. The successful applicant will provide and manage the development and execution of hydrotechnical engineering analysis and design to support various civil heavy earthworks projects including water storage dams, river intakes, earthen containment ponds, pipelines, and industrial surface water management infrastructure. The successful candidate will have the initiative and accountability to work independently and with a team in a rewarding, fast paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Project management, including project initiation, coordination, and execution
  • Assisting in water resources business development
  • Mentoring and managing intermediate and junior water resources engineers
  • Formulate design and detailed calculations, prepare reports, specifications, and construction cost estimates.
  • Delegating design, calculations, reporting and other activities to junior staff and be responsible for the review of the work.
  • Hydrotechnical design and analysis including (but not limited to) hydrologic modelling, hydraulics design and modelling, erosion and sediment control, flood analysis and mitigation design and river engineering
  • Coordinate with civil engineers, civil designers, and environmental scientists to integrate hydrological and hydrotechnical considerations into project designs.
  • Develop and/or review dam break inundation models.
  • Complete watershed delineation, runoff modelling and water balance evaluations.
  • Prepare flood frequency analysis, design storm analysis, peak discharge calculations, and wind/wave calculations using federal design standards.
  • Site inspection and supervision
Necessary Qualifications
  • Hydrotechnical, Water Resources or Civil engineering degree
  • Registered as, or the ability to immediately register as, a P.Eng. in Alberta
  • Computer and software skills to complete hydraulic analysis, including HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, QGIS
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are essential
  • Applicant must be willing to travel and be in the field as required on a project needs basis
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in hydrotechnical engineering, with a focus on civil earthworks and waste management in Alberta, British Columbia, or similar environment.
Assets Considered
  • Experience with the design, operation, and inspection of earthen dams
  • CFD modelling experience.
  • Involvement with the Canadian Dam Association and familiarity with Guidelines
  • Experience the design and construction of large civil earthworks projects
  • Hydraulic design experience
  • Municipal sewer design experience
  • Experience in open pit mine surface water management
  • Experience in environmental sciences

This position will be based in our head office in downtown Calgary, Alberta. Higher Ground Consulting works on a basis of mutual trust and respect with our employees.
