Job summary

Smith + Andersen is seeking an Electrical Designer in Toronto to contribute to intelligent integrated systems across building projects. You will gain hands-on experience in system design, technical analysis and multidisciplinary coordination within a team that emphasizes mentorship and collaboration.

With a focus on growth and learning, you will develop independence while advancing engineering excellence on meaningful Canadian projects.

Qualifications

  • Understanding Codes and Standards relevant to electrical design.
  • Ability to communicate requirements to project teams and authorities.
  • Ability to work independently in a complex, multi-project environment.
  • Strong client and staff communication and coordination skills.
  • Experience coordinating with consultants and contractors.
  • Demonstrate problem solving, urgency and prioritization of tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Perform discipline-specific engineering calculations and equipment selections using standardized tools and applicable codes.
  • Design and develop layouts for building systems on small to medium complexity projects.
  • Coordinate with architects, consultants, contractors and suppliers for design support and equipment selection.
  • Use BIM tools to support system design, coordination and documentation.
  • Support construction administration, shop drawings, site instructions and site reviews.
  • Maintain quality standards by completing and reviewing TQM checklists.
  • Review and support the work of junior team members and contribute to project delivery.

What You'll Do
  • Perform discipline-specific engineering calculations and equipment selections using standardized tools, applying relevant codes and standards to perform detailed code analyses and integrate compliant design solutions.
  • Design and develop layouts for building systems on small to medium complexity projects, incorporating constructability, feasibility, and value-engineering considerations.
  • Coordinate with architects, consultants, contractors, and suppliers/manufacturers for design support and equipment selection across project phases.
  • Use BIM tools to support system design, coordination, and documentation.
  • Support construction administration and site activities, including shop drawing review, preparation of site instructions (SI’s), contemplated change notices (CCNs), site reviews, and surveys.
  • Maintain quality standards by completing and reviewing TQM checklists, ensuring consistency in tagging, equipment designations, and documentation.
  • Review and support the work of junior team members, providing technical guidance while contributing to overall team coordination and project delivery.
Who You Are
  • Understanding Codes and Standards relevant for the project and ability to communicate all requirements to the internal project team, external project team, owner, and Authorities having Jurisdiction.
  • Understanding (construction) project procurement methodologies and is able to recommend or apply such method for the project.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrate ability to work in a complex environment, dealing with multiple projects and clients.
  • Possess sound communication skills as demonstrated through client and staff relations.
  • Demonstrate experience working with other consultants and contractors, and coordination of major projects.
  • Have excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Display strong sense of urgency and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and CAD/Revit would be an asset.
  • Knowledgeable about the BISCI, EIA/TIA and CSA standards would be an asset.
  • Possess two or more years in audiovisual, telecommunications or security design would be an asset.
  • Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) designation and Manufacturer Training would be an asset.
  • P. Eng, RCDD, PSP, CTS-D, MCSE, CCIE Certifications would be an asset.
