About Us
Hitachi Rail offers a global career with a focus on digital transformation and technology. This role is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid) with the team in Montreal.
The general mission is to address all design aspects of a mission-critical communication system that supports the operation of the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. The incumbent analyzes Customer specifications to define network architecture, features and solutions; develops system and subsystem requirements; creates detailed network designs; develops and implements solutions; and participates in deployment, verification and validation activities. The role is accountable for design work within cost and schedule limits as defined in approved work packages and typically works with a team of engineers to define design scope, how it will perform, and how it will be validated. The Technical Design Specialist leads the design and deployment of the solution and coordinates with the Network Architect and/or Manager for review and approval.
Key Accountabilities:- Technical:
- Converts Customer (internal and/or external) requirements into conceptual designs and prepares associated documentation by performing analyses, simulations, and technical trade-off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional features.
- Creates new concepts or modifies existing concepts to fulfill customer requirements.
- Prepares system, subsystem, and interface requirement specifications by analyzing, decomposing, modeling, and refining customer requirements and typical train control domain requirements.
- Performs technical/engineering tasks to define system design, subsystem requirements. Analysis and simulations are performed as necessary to identify design feasibility and driving requirements.
- Creates and documents detailed network designs implementing the requirements.
- Deploys the solutions in the lab and in the field, including supporting testing and commissioning activities.
- Participates in technical reviews of component designs, installation designs, vendor selection and qualification, and other related areas.
- Provides highest-tier support for complex and high-visibility issues in the field.
- Prepares and supports bids and proposals, including customer requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, architecture design, simulation, trade-off of key features, estimation, etc.
- Presents technical design and reports to customers and/or other engineering/management groups in clear, complete, concise and non-ambiguous terms.
- Defines or proposes updates of processes and standards covering the work and its products based on knowledge of systems engineering and/or technical specialty.
- Evaluates operational design limits and performs performance analyses and simulations to support the design.
- Interfaces and builds strong working relationships with Software, Hardware and IVVQ groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issues.
- Leads technical discussions and technical solution presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
- Management:
- Supervises contractors and other systems specialists by defining their work, coaching them on how and what to prepare, monitoring their progress, and directing them on priorities.
- Proposes work package estimates and descriptions based on the knowledge of the work and project requirements.
- Prepares and delivers regular status reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Identifies and implements process improvement initiatives.
- Safety and Security:
- Promotes a safety culture where product safety is paramount.
- Ensures that safety and security are built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety and security-related defects
Key Requirements:
- Experience:
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in the development of industrial control networks
- Education:
- University degree in Computer Sciences, Engineering, or a closely related field
- Technical/Specialized Knowledge:
- Strong application domain (industrial control networks) knowledge
- Knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices
- Knowledge of systems development life cycle
- Knowledge of installation design principles and practices
- Knowledge/experience in site deployment and commissioning of networks
- Expert knowledge of network principles and technologies such as:
- Ethernet/IP-based networking (switching/routing protocols)
- Redundancy and high-availability technologies
- Network/IT services
- MPLS and VPN technologies
- RF networking (802.11, LTE, 4G, 5G, FluidMesh)
- Cyber-security principles, technologies, and solutions
- Knowledge/experience in the following fields is desired:
- Railway-specific designs and standards (e.g., IEC-61375, EN-50159)
- Software Defined Network (SDN) solutions (e.g., VMWare NSX, Cisco)
- SD-WAN solutions
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills
- Good marketing and presentation skills
- Ability to sell/defend product to customers with varying levels of knowledge about automated systems
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Experience in using DOORS, Melody Advance, etc.
- Rail signaling knowledge (desirable)
- Language:
Preferred Qualifications:
- P.Eng. license is desirable
- Rail signaling, CBTC, and knowledge of specification-driven network (as it applies to computer systems involving hardware and software operation) are assets
