The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and ESL (English as a Second Language) programs offer free classes for adult learners. The LINC/ESL instructor is responsible for planning and delivering English language instruction, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar through day-to-day and settlement themes including employment.

Durham Continuing Education is actively seeking qualified candidates for the following position:

LINC/ESL EXTENDED SUPPLY INSTRUCTOR
Position is currently for a CLB Stage I day school instructor

Location: DCE Pickering, 1400 Bayly St, Unit 14A, Pickering

Start Date: As soon as possible

End Date: March 31, 2026 (This position is contingent on funding and may be extended to June 19, 2026).

Monday-Friday: 6 hours per day; This is currently scheduled as an in-person class but may change at any time or as directed by funders

Times:

AM Class - 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM

PM Class - 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM;

Job Description
  • Prepare, plan and deliver English language instruction with the implementation of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) framework and Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) protocol.
  • Provide a safe, nurturing, bias-free, positive and respectful learning environment that recognizes individual differences.
  • Develop and deliver content and learning materials that utilize a broad range of appropriate techniques and strategies.
  • Adapt and create materials and resources to provide individual, small group, and/or remedial instruction as to meet the needs of individual learners.
  • Develop short term and long-term goals appropriate to the needs and interests of learners.
  • Prepare and conduct regular learner assessments in order to determine learners' progress as appropriate to individual learners and programs as per Ministry mandated PBLA Guidelines.
  • Monitor and record student progress on a regular basis in order to maintain continuous quality improvement standards.
  • Maintain up to date digital classrooms using Avenue and/or Google Classroom/D2L.
  • Conduct learner-instructor conferences and complete and submit reports
  • Report, record and maintain accurate and up-to-date attendance data in HARTS as the English Second Language Instructor appropriate to the program.
  • Ensure maintenance of accurate documentation of all learner files to meet the required standards. Encourage clients to become autonomous, active, and self-aware learners, engaged in and responsible for their learning.
  • Collaborate and be part of effective planning by sharing best practices with colleagues.
  • Network and develop partnerships with community partners and agencies.
  • Participate in Administration organized/delivered Professional Development activities/training.
  • Maintain accurate assessment tracking logs, inventory lists and master assessment binder for submission to Administration at the end of the school year.
  • Complete and submit field trip forms as needed.
  • Stay aware of settlement issues in the local community.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must be TESL Ontario certified and TESL Ontario membership in good standing
  • Experience working with adults an asset
  • Successful completion of PBLA training
  • Successful completion of Avenue training
  • Comfort and experience working in an online learning environment preferred
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Background Check is required
