Responsibilities
- Reporting to the supervisor, the Data Scientist will be responsible for collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify business needs and implementing data-driven solutions, analyzing complex data models, developing and deploying machine learning models for predictive analytics including the transformation of large datasets using Azure Databricks and Apache Spark, creating data visualizations and dashboards using Power BI or similar tools.
- The ideal candidate will have hands‑on expertise in Azure Synapse and Azure Databricks environments, ensuring the efficient processing, analysis, and interpretation of complex datasets to drive data-informed decision‑making.
Scope of work includes the following
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business needs and implement data-driven solutions
- Build, maintain, and optimize ETL pipelines
- Process and transform large datasets using Azure Databricks and Apache Spark
- Design, develop, and implement AI/ML models and advanced data analytics solutions
- Develop and deploy machine learning models for predictive analytics
- Work with large-scale data processing frameworks using Azure Databricks and Spark
- Conduct exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, and predictive modelling
- Create data visualizations and dashboards using Power BI or similar tools
- Ensure best practices in data governance, model performance, and scalable architecture
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in AI/ML and cloud-based analytics
- Other project duties as assigned

- Completed system components 'unit tested' and ready for System, QA and User Acceptance testing
- Technical support during the various stages of testing (system integration, QA, User Acceptance)

Skills and Certifications
Mandatory Skills and Experience
- 5+ years of experience in data science, machine learning and advanced analytics
- 5+ years of experience with Azure SQL Server, Synapse and Databricks
- 5+ years of experience with SQL and Python
- Building and deploying AI/ML models in Azure Machine Learning (AML) Azure Open AI and other Azure services
- Developing reports with Power BI or other visualization tools
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Azure Synapse and Azure Databricks tools and environments
- Solid understanding of data lake architecture and data warehousing principles
- Strong understanding of data modelling, ETL pipelines and big data solutions
- Strong programming skills in SQL and Python
- Expertise in Apache Spark and big data processing
- Expertise with structured and unstructured data sources
- Building and deploying AI/ML models in Azure Machine Learning (AML) services
- Expertise with Power BI or other visualization tools for reporting
Analytical Skills
- Proven ability to derive actionable insights from complex datasets
- Experience with statistical analysis, predictive modelling, and machine learning techniques
- Advanced knowledge of SQL for data manipulation and querying
- Experience with visualization tools like Power BI for reporting
Soft Skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
- Adaptability to learn and implement new technologies
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Substantial knowledge of cloud computing & data virtualization
- Experience in initiatives involving IT solutions and multiple stakeholders
- Understanding of the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
Certifications
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate (desirable)
- Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate (desirable)
