The Canadian Banking Technology (CBT) team supports the end‑to‑end technology needs of Scotiabank’s Canadian banking business, including a broad range of banking products and services from savings and chequing accounts to credit cards and commercial loans. The Data Engineering team under CBT is responsible for delivering data integration solutions for a variety of business lines, supporting regulatory, compliance, Big Data Analytics, Cloud technologies, and risk reporting requirements.
As a Data Engineer you will contribute to the overall success of the Data Engineering and Data Services function in Canada. You will ensure your individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives, while staying compliant with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Champion a customer‑focused culture, deepening client relationships and leveraging broader bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
- Champion a high‑performance environment and contribute to an inclusive work environment.
- Participate in data engineering and transformation design to ensure highly scalable, extensible, and performant solutions.
- Hands‑on development supporting data integration, analytics and cloud environments.
- Contribute to data ingestion, transformation and extraction solutions in the Enterprise Big Data platform (EDL).
- Contribute to data and project design and delivery for high‑visibility projects such as the TSYS Modernization.
- Translate architecture or design into logical and physical data models compliant with existing and evolving standards and practices.
- Work with Data Architecture and QA teams to ensure risk considerations are incorporated into day‑to‑day decisions.
- Actively pursue efficient operations of your area in accordance with organization values and the Code of Conduct, ensuring adequate business controls for operational, compliance, and AML/ATF/sanctions obligations.
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of industry experience in software development using agile methods (Scrum, Kanban, etc.).
- Excellent understanding of database and data management concepts and technologies.
- At least 3 years of experience working with Big Data technologies including Apache Hadoop, Hive, Sqoop, Spark.
- At least 3 years of hands‑on experience with Talend or a similar ETL tool.
- At least 3 years of hands‑on experience with Java and/or Python.
- Hands‑on experience with Unix/Linux command line interface (CLI) and shell scripting.
- Experience with GitHub, JIRA, Confluence, DevOps, Jenkins pipelines, and code promotion.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Level 3 production support experience is an asset and sometimes required.
