Job summary

The City of Leduc is seeking a permanent, full-time Data Engineer to build and evolve a modern data platform hosted on Microsoft Fabric. You will design data pipelines, Lakehouse structures, and governance controls to support enterprise analytics and trusted Power BI reporting.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines and integration workflows using Microsoft Fabric components.
• Build and evolve the Fabric Lakehouse with Bronze/Silver/Gold layers for enterprise analytics.
• Develop analytics-ready data models and Power BI semantic models with security and performance considerations.
• Implement governance and security controls (Purview, Entra ID) for data lineage, cataloguing, access, and permissions.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve automated data workflows and data quality.
• Collaborate with GIS, ITS, and stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into reliable data products.

With the recent establishment of our Data & Analytics division within Corporate Information Technology (CIT), we are transitioning from decentralized departmental reporting to a governed, modern data platform.

We are seeking a permanent, full-time Data Engineer to play a foundational role in building and evolving this platform. You will join an agile, collaborative team focused on establishing reliable data architecture from the ground up. What is the Opportunity?

Reporting directly to the Manager, Data & Analytics, the Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the City’s central data platform hosted on Microsoft Fabric. You will develop and operationalize data pipelines, integration processes, and Lakehouse structures that bring together information from more than 100 enterprise business applications.

In this role, you will connect hands-on data engineering with real-world business intelligence. Working closely with GIS and data analysts, CIT application teams, business stakeholders, and external technical partners, you will help ensure that organizational data is accurate, secure, reusable, and optimised for reporting. You will implement technical governance controls within the City’s established data governance framework, including identity-based access, data quality checks, lineage, cataloguing, and trusted semantic models that support dependable Power BI reporting.

What will you do?

In this pivotal platform-building role, you will shape our data architecture, pipeline reliability, and reporting capabilities. You will:

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines and integration workflows using Microsoft Fabric components, including Data Factory and Dataflow Gen2, to ingest data from relational SQL databases, APIs, and flat files.

• Build, maintain, and evolve the Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse based on the City’s approved architecture and standards, implementing layered medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold) to support dependable, enterprise-wide analytics.

• Develop and optimize analytics-ready data models and support Power BI semantic models, including relationships, measures, performance considerations, and row-level security.

• Implement technical data governance and security controls using tools such as Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Entra ID, supporting the City’s standards for data lineage, cataloguing, classification, access, and permissions.

• Monitor and troubleshoot automated data workflows, applying root-cause analysis to resolve pipeline failures, address data quality discrepancies, and maintain operational continuity.
