Job summary

Miller Waste Systems in Dartmouth, NS is seeking a Utility Person & Fabricator to maintain containers, fleet equipment and yard operations. You will clean, weld, paint, repair and perform general upkeep in a safety‑driven, fast‑paced setting.

The role requires teamwork, mechanical aptitude and keen attention to detail. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm with immediate start and the ability to lift heavy materials.

Qualifications

• Welding experience required.
• Must have a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
• Mechanically inclined with basic knowledge of hand tools.
• Able to lift heavy materials in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Apply grinding, sanding, paint touch ups, as well as power washing and buffing on fleet components.
• Measure, cut, shape and assemble metal parts using hand tools and fabrication equipment.
• Conduct repairs or modifications to existing metal structures or equipment.
• Assist with loading, unloading and moving materials as required.
• Coordinate pickup and delivery of receptacles for events.
• Liaise with Shop Team, Operations Supervisors and Drivers in a professional, team-oriented manner.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment per health and safety regulations.
• Report equipment issues and quality defects to supervisors.
• Support additional projects and duties as assigned.

Summary

A Utility Person & Fabricator is a safety-focused, hands-on employee responsible for maintaining containers, fleet equipment, and yard operations through cleaning, welding, painting, repairs, and general upkeep. This role requires strong teamwork, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Apply techniques and standards in grinding, sanding, paint touch ups, as well as power washing, buffing/polishing stained or faded areas on fleet and receptacles
• Measure, cut, shape, and assemble metal components using hand tools and fabrication equipment
• Conduct repairs or modifications to existing metal structures or equipmentMake sure containers are available for scheduled deliveries on a daily basis to meet the requirements of the sales team
• Assist with loading, unloading, and moving materials as required
• Coordinate pickup and delivery of receptacles for special events
• Liaise with Shop Team, Operations Supervisors and Drivers in a professional and team-oriented manner
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with health and safety regulations.
• Ensure that all work is performed safely, cost effectively and in a timely manner
• Ensure that all equipment, vehicles and work areas are in compliance with all safety policies and regulations at all times
• Report equipment issues, production concerns, or quality defects to supervisors
• Additional projects and duties as assigned

Competencies & Qualifications

• Must adhere to Miller Waste System safety protocols and must be familiar with occupational Health & Safety Act
• Must have a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence
• Previous welding experience is required
• Mechanically inclined and basic knowledge of hand tools, with preference given to those with related experience
• Positive attitude and strong work ethic
• Willingness to take on new challenges and grow with experience
• Computer knowledge and excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to lift heavy materials and work in a physically demanding environment
• Flexibility and adaptable attitude along with attention to detail is a must
• You must also be able to work with minimal supervision and be an active and effective team player
