Job summary

A First Nations child welfare organization is seeking a Customary Care Coordinator responsible for educating and coordinating Customary Care Agreements among First Nations. The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor of Social Work or related diploma and have five years direct experience in child welfare. Ability to travel within the jurisdiction and knowledge of Anishinabek people's cultural practices are essential. This role aims to ensure children are protected and connected to their community and cultural values. Competitive wages and benefits are included.

Job description
Overview

The Customary Care Coordinator is responsible for the education and awareness of the Customary Care service model and program to the seven First Nations and their membership. This position will be responsible to coordinate Customary Care Agreements among the UCCMM affiliated First Nations and Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve within the agency’s jurisdiction and outside of the agency’s jurisdiction.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Social Work Degree or Social Services Related Diploma, at least five (5) years direct experience in child welfare field, working in direct service with First Nations Families.
  • Have a class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License, access to a personal vehicle and be able to travel.
  • Possess a total of five (5) years direct frontline experience within the child welfare field.
  • Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services respects and recognizes that a First Nation community member may possess the necessary skills with on‑going training and educational planning may fulfil the requirements of the position;
  • Experience in working within an Anishinaabe Child and Family Well‑Being Services is preferred or proven experience in working with Anishinabek people.
Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply a wide range of social work practices / principles and native‑based methods is essential; particularly with respect to protection and placements of children at risk and understanding the principles and goals for fam
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation, management and evaluation of child welfare Foster Care standards and programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Child, Youth & Family Services Act, regulations and standards, provincial court child protection applications, especially in the interpretation of Part IV, Sec.71 of the CYFSA– the provision of Customary Care by the First Nations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Given the traditional practices of the Anishinabek, from time‑to‑time exposure to wood smoke and the burning of sacred medicines, including tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar, may occur within the work setting.
  • Candidate must live within the service area, or be willing to relocate.

About Kina Gbezhgomi Child And Family Services

On April 1, 2012 Kina Gbezhgomi Child And Family Services transferred the direct service delivery and management of the prevention services inclusive of family and community support services to the First Nations. Each of the First Nations and Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services has a Contribution Agreement outlining the roles and responsibilities of the agency and First Nation in this collaborative partnership inclusive of agency support and training, funding arrangements, service and financial reporting. Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services completed this process as a transition phase to a fully integrated child welfare model in preparation for designation as a child welfare agency, and also to reflect the membership requests in relation to First Nation community based delivery of prevention services.
