Position Title (as listed): Janitorial-Maintenance Worker
Purpose
The Janitorial-Maintenance Worker is responsible to provide day-to-day maintenance cleaning and grounds keeping duties to ensure the property is safe, clean and well maintained, as well as providing alternate weekend on-call duties.
Responsibilities
- Accountabilities — General: Respond to emergencies on an on-call basis. Report any problems or items requiring repair and/or maintenance that may be noticed during duties. Report electrical and plumbing deficiencies as appropriate. Safely store and maintain all related equipment and supplies. Attend meetings and training sessions related to the Workplace Health and Safety Committee. Other duties as requested or assigned by the Supervisor and/or Director.
- Interior Maintenance: Do minor repairs as necessary. Do basic painting as required. Miscellaneous minor maintenance (e.g., ensuring interior lights are operable). Cutting of keys. Repaired damaged furniture.
- Exterior Maintenance: Keep exterior of the building safe and in good repair. Keep entrance sidewalks / walkways clear of snow and ice; apply ice-melter when needed. Miscellaneous minor maintenance (e.g., ensuring exterior light fixtures are operable; cleaning of outside benches / picnic tables / patio furniture).
- Vehicle Maintenance: Maintain vehicle by ensuring repairs are completed. Ensure fluids (oil, fuel, etc.) are maintained. Clean interior and exterior of vehicles as needed.
- Cleaning: Clean exterior ground floor windows, glass doors at entrances and exterior doors. Clean up paper litter and other refuse. Clean all common areas. Refill cleaning supplies to each floor. Daily remove garbage and recycling. Remove paper litter from the interior. Vacuum corridors weekly. Wash and polish floors. Sweep and mop stairwells as required. Clean interior and exterior windows. Clean and sanitize common area washrooms.
- Other Duties: Write detailed incident and on-call reports; report serious occurrences immediately to the supervisor. Assist management in inspections of the property. Assist in setting up for building events and functions. Undertake other assignments as requested by the supervisor or designate. Be available to respond to serious emergencies 24/7 when in the building. Lift, pull, push, install appliances.
- Critical Relationship Management: Internal relationships: staff members, volunteers; External relationships: vendors, clients (residents, other hired trades).
- Financial and Materials Management: Minimal material responsibility (e.g., hand tools). Uses or maintains organization assets per guidelines. Does not process financial transactions and has no budget responsibilities.
- Working Conditions: Work environment is typically throughout the building and external grounds. On-call availability required. Must be physically able to walk 12,000 steps per day; ability to lift 30 lbs.
Qualifications
- Education Qualifications and Certifications: Completion of a high school diploma. General understanding of basic construction, maintenance and mechanical systems and health and safety related issues. Must have valid WHMIS training. Valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract. Provide an original copy of a background check satisfactory to The Salvation Army (screening through CPIC or local police). Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Experience and Skills: 2 years of prior related experience including custodial, computer skills and general electrical/plumbing experience. Basic electrical and plumbing skills with good working knowledge of power tools, lawn care equipment.
- Skills and Capabilities: Caring and positive attitude. Conforms with Salvation Army Employee Handbook. Good communication skills; ability to narrate an incident. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Alignment with the mission of The Salvation Army.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77. Placement in the salary range will be based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
