Job Description

Position Purpose Summary: The Custodial Supervisor provides leadership and direct oversight to the custodial team, ensuring a safe, clean, and well‑maintained facility. Responsibilities include staff supervision, task assignment, quality control, supply management, scheduling, and communication with internal and external stakeholders. This role ensures compliance with health, safety, and organizational standards.

Accountabilities
Coordination & Operations
  • Coordinate and oversee all daily custodial operations, ensuring facilities are clean, safe, and well‑maintained.
  • Develop, assign, and adjust work schedules to ensure adequate staff coverage for all shifts and special events.
  • Conduct regular inspections of work areas to ensure adherence to cleanliness of operational policy standards and regulations.
  • Lead, train, and coach custodial staff to maintain high standards of performance and consistency.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for custodial issues and coordinate with other departments for support.
  • Respond to emergency cleaning requests, spills, hazards, and urgent needs, effectively deploying staff as necessary.
  • Monitor cleaning supply inventory, ordering and distributing products as needed.
  • Ensure proper use, care, and maintenance of custodial equipment and tools.
  • Develop and implement cleaning routines, task lists, and inspection checklists for consistent service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate records of schedules, inspections, inventory, incidents, and maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate and enforce workplace safety procedures, ensuring all custodial staff follow health, safety, and PPE guidelines.
  • Review and update annual custodial work plans, schedules, and staffing needs.
  • Complete annual audits of custodial supplies, equipment, and tools.
  • Participate in annual facility inspections and audits to ensure health and safety compliance.
  • Evaluate custodial operations to identify areas for improvement in efficiency and cost‑saving measures.
  • Other work‑related duties as assigned.
Staff Supervision & Performance Management
  • Foster a positive and collaborative team environment, promoting teamwork and resolving conflicts effectively.
  • Provide new hire onboarding support, hands‑on training, and guidance to new custodial staff, ensuring they are fully onboarded and familiar with policies and procedures.
  • Monitor staff performance, providing constructive feedback and coaching to help meet organizational standards in conjunction with the Facility Manager.
  • Lead by example in demonstrating professionalism, reliability, and a strong work ethic.
  • Conduct regular one‑on‑one meetings with staff to review performance and address any concerns.
  • Ensure custodial staff maintain professionalism, reliability, and a strong work ethic at all times.
  • Identify opportunities for professional development and coordinate training to enhance staff skills.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for custodial staff, set development goals, and assess overall team performance.
  • Provide support with other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager.
Administrative & Reporting
  • Prepare and submit regular custodial reports, including schedules, inspections, inventory usage, and maintenance activities.
  • Develop, maintain, and update custodial staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Maintain accurate records of employee attendance, work assignments, and timesheets.
  • Track and manage inventory of cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment, placing purchase orders as needed.
  • Manage the custodial budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and compliance with financial guidelines.
  • Coordinate work orders and service requests with other departments and external vendors for custodial support.
  • Ensure all documentation related to custodial operations is accurate and up‑to‑date.
Meetings & Communication
  • Attend regular management and departmental meetings to provide updates on custodial operations and address concerns.
  • Conduct team huddles and provide clear direction regarding daily tasks, priorities, and expectations.
  • Participate in health and safety meetings to ensure compliance with workplace standards.
  • Meet with vendors or contractors as needed to coordinate custodial supplies or services.
  • Facilitate communication between custodial staff, management, and other departments to ensure smooth operations.
  • Provide reports and updates on staffing levels, inventory, and operational needs.
Working Conditions
  • This is a permanent, full‑time position at 40 hours per week. Weekly schedule is Tuesday to Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • May be required to work at all CS(C) locations; travel between sites using a company or personal vehicle.
  • Required to be available via cell phone in emergencies.
  • Working conditions may be isolated, may include a work or on‑call schedule affecting lifestyle, dealing with verbal abuse, angry or abusive people.
  • The incumbent may have little to moderate travel required.
  • Potential exposure to hazards: physical attack from members, traffic accidents when driving.
  • May be required to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • Potential exposure to hazards: infectious diseases, toxic chemicals, scabies, lice and/or bed bugs, emergency response situations (fire, bomb threat, etc.) and other potentially dangerous situations; domestic cleaning supplies; bodily fluids/wastes, sharp objects, dirt/dust/odor, hot equipment (ovens, stoves, etc.).
  • Exposure to varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Risk of physical strain, including back injuries and repetitive motion injuries (e.g., Carpal Tunnel Syndrome).
Education and Experience Qualifications
Education, Qualifications and Certifications
  • Community College Diploma in a related field of two academic years or equivalent experience.
  • Police Information Check (PIC) with Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Child Intervention Check and Abuse Registry Clearance.
  • Class 5 Driver's License.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (St. John’s Emergency or Red Cross, Level C).
  • WHMIS and Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Training.
  • Respect in the Workplace and Armatus Learn to Protect Training.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant custodial or facility management experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Capabilities
  • Prior related experience with basic custodial management systems and Workday.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office such as Word, Excel Outlook, Teams and Sharepoint and ability to use/search the Internet.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem‑solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with a flexible and proactive approach.
  • Proven positive leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $57,399.98 to $71,749.97 with a maximum of $86,099.96. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
