Job summary

Central Okanagan Public Schools invites applications for a temporary Skilled Culinary Educator with BC Teaching Certification. You will teach Culinary Arts at the secondary level, create engaging lessons, and support a hands-on, real-world learning environment in a commercial kitchen.

Emphasis on inclusivity, collaboration and life skills. Applicants must hold BC Teaching Certification and a Home Economics degree or equivalent; preferred credentials include Red Seal and FOODSAFE.

Qualifications

  • Hold a British Columbia Professional Teaching Certificate.
  • Bachelor or Diploma in Home Economics (or equivalent).
  • Experience teaching Culinary Arts and working in a commercial kitchen.
  • Ability to collaborate with school and district teams.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Culinary Arts at the Secondary level per BC Curriculum and timetables.
  • Create engaging, inclusive, skills-based learning aligned with core competencies.
  • Model and reinforce safe food preparation and kitchen routines.
  • Support diverse learners in a collaborative environment.
  • Manage kitchen program tasks including inventory, ordering and quality standards.
  • Follow Healthy School guidelines for meals and programs.
  • Use MyEdBC, email and digital tools for planning and communication.

Skilled Culinary Educators with BC Teaching Certification

Bring your chef skills to the classroom and shape the next generation of Culinary Arts students! We are inviting applications from dynamic, skilled culinary educators who are passionate about teaching and learning, and who want to inspire students through hands-on, real-world Culinary Arts learning experiences. This is an exciting opportunity for educators who thrive in practical learning spaces, love building community, and are energized by teaching students to grow their confidence, competence, and independence.

You would be responsible for supporting a commercial kitchen learning environment where students help prepare healthy cafeteria food for students and staff, a powerful setting for authentic learning, teamwork, leadership, and life skills.

Core Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
  • Teach Culinary Arts at the Secondary level (including semestered timetables where applicable).
  • Create engaging, inclusive, skills-based learning aligned with BC's Curriculum and core competencies.
  • Teach, model, and reinforce safe, efficient food preparation and kitchen routines in an inclusive learning environment.
  • Support students with varying abilities in a collaborative, respectful learning environment.
  • In commercial kitchen: organize, budget for, stock, and manage a kitchen program, including inventory, ordering, quality standards, and safe equipment use.
  • Follow Healthy School guidelines in preparation of food for school lunch and school break programs.
  • Use technology for planning, instruction, communication, attendance, and reporting (e.g., MyEdBC, email, digital tools).
Applicants must:
  • Hold a British Columbia Professional Teaching Certificate.
  • A Bachelor of Home Economics, Diploma of Home Economics, or equivalent.
  • Have training and/or experience as a Culinary Arts educator.
  • Have training and/or experience in a commercial kitchen and/or chef's training.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative/team environment, supporting school and district goals.
Preference will be given to applicants with:
  • Red Seal certification in Chef's training (or are actively working toward it)
  • FOODSAFE Level 1
  • FOODSAFE Level 2
  • FOODSAFE Instructor
  • Successful experience with middle and/or senior secondary learners
  • Experience implementing:
  • Quality Assessment practices (Assessment for, as, and of learning; criterion-referenced grading; differentiation)
  • Inclusive practices that reflect the unique needs and strengths of all learners
  • The First Peoples Principles of Learning and core competencies
  • Demonstrate a commitment to participating in and supporting curricular and co-curricular culinary contests, skill-building events, and activities
  • Proficiency with professional/ industrial kitchen systems and equipment
  • Have Indigenous ancestry (as per Special Program with the BC Human Rights Tribunal

The starting annual salary for this teaching position ranges from $57,972 to $106,217, with placement based on length of service and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.
