Job description

Job Title: Crown Prosecutor (Classifications: Crown Prosecutor 1–3)

Location: Grande Prairie, Alberta

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (full‑time)

Classification: Crown Prosecutor 1 – 3 (Open Competition, permanent)

Closing Date: November 10, 2025

Salary: Crown Prosecutor 1 – $3,854.79 to $4,855.92 bi‑weekly ($100,610.02 to $126,739.51 annually); Crown Prosecutor 2 – $5,462.50 to $6,764.60 bi‑weekly ($142,571.25 to $176,556.06 annually); Crown Prosecutor 3 – $7,275.46 to $8,067.13 bi‑weekly ($189,889.50 to $210,552.09 annually)

Retention Incentive: 10% of the current salary after one year of continuous employment at the Grande Prairie office. Crown prosecutors also receive one earned day off per month for excess hours worked.

Role Responsibilities

As a Crown Prosecutor you will deliver justice through fearless, fair and effective prosecutions. Core duties include:

  • Determining bail, charge screening, early case resolution and alternative measures
  • Deciding whether to proceed to trial or discontinue a prosecution
  • Conducting all prosecutions, entering stays of proceedings, withdrawing charges, and resolving pleas
  • Preparing and providing disclosure, electing to proceed summarily or by indictment, taking positions on sentence, drafting legal opinions and briefings
  • Working with victims, witnesses and police, and launching appeals where appropriate

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) and active membership or immediate eligibility with the Law Society of Alberta
  • Legal experience: Crown Prosecutor 1 – 0‑4 years; Crown Prosecutor 2 – 4+ years; Crown Prosecutor 3 – 11+ years
Other Requirements
  • Foreign law degrees must be accredited by the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA)
  • Valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator license; travel within Alberta is required

Asset: Experience in Criminal Litigation is an asset
