Course Lecturer: BIEN 280 - Thermodynamics in Bioengineering

Position: Course Lecturer

Hiring Unit: Department of Bioengineering

Position and course description: The candidate will be responsible for the teaching, course management, and grading activities in the course.

Course Content

Applicants must be familiar with the course content:

• Internal Energy, Work, The three Laws of Thermodynamics, Enthalpy, and Entropy
• Basic concepts of energy in living organisms: distribution of energy, energy conservation in living organisms, isothermal systems, Gibbs free energy in chemical coupling, reversible processes and redox reactions
• Application of Thermodynamics in defining biological processes and components such as hydrolysis, osmosis, ELISA, PCR, DNA, amino acids, proteins

Teaching Qualification Requirements

• Ph.D. in Engineering or the Natural Sciences
• At least 1 year teaching experience
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license required (or in progress)
• Expertise in fundamentals of thermodynamics, physical and chemical equilibrium
• Knowledge of biological systems and/or biochemistry desired
• Demonstrated knowledge of spoken and written English
• Strong problem-solving skills and flexible approach to teaching
• Understanding of cross-cultural practices
