Job summary

Aramark at Dalhousie University in Halifax is seeking a Cook 1 to join Dal Food Services. You will train staff, cook using standardized recipes, and set up efficient workstations while maintaining high food-safety standards.

The role requires 5+ years’ culinary experience, batch cooking for large quantities, and relevant certifications. A union role offering medical/dental benefits and meal plans is provided.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of culinary experience across various settings.
• Experience with large quantity batch cooking.
• Journeyman or Red Seal Certification in the Cook trade (preferred).
• Leadership experience, either as contributor or manager.
• Valid WHMIS and Food Safe (Basic or Advanced); First Aid is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Train and guide staff on duties, food safety and sanitation.
• Cook and prepare food following recipes and guidelines.
• Set up workstation with ingredients and equipment.
• Prepare ingredients by measuring, weighing, chopping and peeling.
• Safely use utensils and operate ovens, stoves, slicers, mixers.
• Bake, roast, broil, steam using varied methods.
• Portion and garnish food per guidelines.
• Store food per safety policies; clean and sanitize areas.
• Maintain excellent customer service with a positive attitude.
• Follow Aramark safety policies including asset security.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Trains and guides staff on job duties, standard food safety and sanitation procedures, cooking methods, etc.
• Cooks and prepares food following production guidelines and standardized recipes
• Sets up workstation with all needed ingredients and equipment
• Prepares ingredients by measuring, weighing, mixing, chopping, trimming, and peeling food items
• Safely uses all food utensils including knives
• Operates equipment such as ovens, stoves, slicers, mixers, etc.
• Bakes, roasts, broils, steams, and uses a variety of cooking methods on meats, vegetables, and other foods
• Arranges, garnishes, and portions food following established guidelines
• Properly stores food by following food safety policies and procedures
• Cleans and sanitizes work areas, equipment, and utensils
• Maintains excellent customer service with a positive attitude towards guests, customers, clients, co-workers, etc.
• Follows Aramark safety policies and procedures including food safety and sanitation
• Ensures security of company assets

QUALIFICATIONS

• 5+ years culinary experience regardless of industry
• Experience with large quantity batch cooking required
• Journeyman or Red Seal Certification in the Cook trade or equivalent preferred
• Experience in leadership role, either individual contributor or people manager an asset
• Valid WHMIS and Food Safe (Basic or Advanced), First Aid Certification is an asset
• Knowledge of and commitment to upholding high standards of food safety and hygiene
• Additional certification may be required by work location
• Skilled in task prioritization and time management
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently supervised and unsupervised
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a genuine desire to provide outstanding customer service
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues to ensure smooth operations

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The pay range for this position is $24.21 - $24.21.
