Job summary

Actalent in Vancouver, BC is seeking a Controls Engineer / Electrical Technologist to design, program, commission, and support industrial control systems for complex equipment. This hybrid role is ~75% design and PLC programming, with travel to domestic and international sites for commissioning, startup, FATs, and customer support.

You will work with customers, contractors, and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years designing and commissioning industrial control systems.
• 3+ years PLC programming with Siemens, Allen-Bradley, ABB, Beckhoff, or similar.
• Hands-on commissioning and troubleshooting of PLC-based equipment.
• Willing to travel up to 25% internationally.

Job Description

The Controls Engineer / Electrical Technologist is responsible for the design, programming, commissioning, and support of industrial control systems used in complex engineered equipment and systems.

This hybrid role is approximately 75% focused on electrical/control system design and PLC programming, with the remaining 25% involving domestic and international travel for commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, FATs, and customer support.

Responsibilities

• Design control systems for complex electromechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, conveyors, sensors, and other automated systems.
• Program, configure, test, and commission industrial PLC and control platforms.
• Support commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, FATs, and system validation activities.
• Travel to domestic and international customer sites to support equipment installation and commissioning.
• Work directly with customers, contractors, operators, vendors, and other project stakeholders.
• Support projects throughout the full lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through installation, startup, and customer handover.
• Troubleshoot electrical, controls, instrumentation, and automation issues in both factory and field environments.

Essential Skills

• Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 3 years of experience designing and commissioning industrial control systems.
• Minimum 3 years of PLC programming experience using Siemens, Allen-Bradley, ABB, Beckhoff, or comparable industrial automation platforms.
• Hands-on experience commissioning and troubleshooting PLC-based equipment in an industrial environment.
• Experience working with electrical controls, sensors, instrumentation, motors, and associated field devices.
• Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 25% of the time.
• Valid passport and ability to travel internationally without significant restrictions.
• Demonstrated experience working directly with customers, contractors, operators, or site personnel during commissioning activities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Strong preference for candidates with Siemens PLC programming experience and exposure to TIA Portal.
• Exposure to SolidWorks or other 3D CAD platforms for equipment review, layout coordination, or sensor placement.
• Experience leading or independently executing commissioning activities at customer sites.
• Experience supporting projects across multiple geographic locations.
• Red Seal Electrician certification considered an asset.
• EIT, P.Eng., or eligibility for professional engineering registration considered an asset.
• Experience within industrial automation, process equipment, material handling, conveying, pumping systems, manufacturing equipment, or other complex electromechanical systems.
• Experience with both control system design and hands-on field wiring/troubleshooting.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers or coordinating technical workstreams considered an asset.
• Demonstrated progression toward technical lead or team lead responsibilities considered an asset.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Vancouver, BC.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.46 - $50.48/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
