Role Description
The Controller will lead the organization's financial operations, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, regulatory and donor compliance, and strong internal controls. This role supports financial sustainability across multi-country operations and will oversee accounting, budgeting, audits, and financial systems. The Controller will also mentor finance staff and drive process improvements.
Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Reporting
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations across all country offices.
- Prepare and review consolidated financial statements and donor-specific reports.
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends and provide actionable insights.
Compliance & Internal Controls
- Ensure compliance with Canadian GAAP, ASNPO, CRA regulations, and international donor requirements.
- Maintain and strengthen internal control systems and risk management frameworks.
- Lead coordination of external audits and ensure timely resolution of audit findings.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Manage the annual budgeting process and support departmental budget planning.
- Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis to leadership.
- Develop multi-year financial forecasts and funding gap analyses.
Grants & Donor Financial Management
- Oversee financial management of restricted and unrestricted grants.
- Ensure donor budgets align with program goals and reporting requirements.
- Support proposal development with budget inputs and cost recovery strategies.
Team Leadership & Capacity Building
- Supervise and mentor finance staff, particularly in Africa.
- Build financial capacity of local teams through training and coaching.
- Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Manage financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar).
- Lead implementation of new tools and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Ensure integration of finance with HR, procurement, and program operations.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
- CPA, CA, CMA or equivalent designation is an asset.
- 7+ Years of progressive financial management experience.
- 3 years in a senior financial role within an international nonprofit is an asset.
- Experience managing multi-currency budgets and international donor compliance.
- Experience managing cross-country teams is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards and donor regulations.
- Excellent analytical, budgeting, and forecasting skills.
- Strong leadership, communication, and cross-cultural collaboration skills.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Proficiency in PowerBI is an asset.
- Ability to travel internationally up to 10-20% of the time.
