The Opportunity

Contract Field Instructors, Heavy Equipment Operator

The Industry Training & Continuing Education team is seeking Heavy Equipment Operator Field Instructors to add to our roster for a growing number of contract opportunities to instruct in the Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) 12-week program and other contract training. The anticipated terms of employment for these contract opportunities will vary, and instructors will be contracted as opportunities arise.

Key Job Functions
  • Maintain and update curriculum as required
  • Work with Lead Instructor to assist with the development of lesson plans and scheduling of daily training
  • Delivery of the HEO course over a 12-week period and/or short industry training sessions
  • Set up and coordinate on-site training locations, including provisions for facilities, equipment, and supplies
  • Assist lead instructor to develop quizzes, assignments, and field evaluations as required
  • Ensure on-site operations comply with Occupational Health and Safety Standards as well as all regulations pertaining to the heavy equipment industry
  • Ensure complete and up-to-date records of student performance and course attendance
  • Identify and troubleshoot equipment repairs
  • Maintain repair and maintenance records, and coordinate regular equipment maintenance
  • Provide regular feedback, and reports as requested, to the Lead Instructor and Trades’ Programming Coordinator
  • Attend meetings as requested
Qualifications, Skills And Knowledge Required
  • A minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience in the Heavy Equipment Operator trade is required
  • The successful candidate will have extensive experience operating and maintaining a wide variety of heavy equipment (loaders, graders, dozers, excavators, and skid-steers)
  • Preference will be given to candidates who possess a minimum of a class 3 operator’s license
  • Strong interpersonal and time management skills and organizational abilities are vital
  • Solid computer skills are required, (Google Applications experience is an asset)
  • Experience instructing at the post-secondary level and/or experience as a trainer in the heavy equipment operator field would be an asset
  • Successful candidates will possess the ability to work both independently and within a team environment
